Ireland voters overwhelmingly supported women having access to abortion clinics in May.  Now that the Ireland government has officially revoked its abortion ban, this will mean women will be able to get abortions for free!

Ireland Health Minister Simon Harris said:

“Yes, it is my intention that the services will be free”

He continued:

“I’ve said from the start that I don’t want cost to be a barrier, because if cost is a barrier, you get into a situation where one of two things could happen: you see private clinics develop – we don’t want that to happen in Ireland, we want this to be part of an integrated public health service — and secondly, you can see people having to continue to travel.”

Previously, women in Ireland had to travel to other countries get abortion procedures done. But revoking this abortion ban means that Ireland women can have free abortions under the government funded healthcare.

Having government funded healthcare is still lacking in America because it is still sadly viewed as a partisan issue.  Free healthcare AND free abortions would be such a mindblowing proposal in the United States. The religious right would lose their mind. However, it’s really quite silly that we don’t have these services for our citizens.

It’s always amusing to me when Americans discuss how we are the “greatest country in the world” for reasons like this. We don’t take good care of our citizens. We don’t help the sick and poor very well. We work longer hours and we send people to prison much more than other countries. Our wealth inequality is also at absurd levels.

Yet, we keep telling Americans if they just work hard, anything is possible. Sigh. The American Dream is just that, a dream. It’s not real. And the sooner we accept this, the better off our country will be.
