Lucy Flores, a former Democratic politician in Nevada, accused Joe Biden of some creepy behavior. According to Flores, Biden came up behind her at a 2014 event, smelled her hair, and then gave her a slow kiss on the top of her head. Flores didn’t say this was sexual, but definitely inappropriate and made her feel “uneasy.” Another woman, Amy Lappos, said Biden grabbed her by the head and rubbed noses with her at a 2009 fundraiser. Again, Lappos said it didn’t feel sexual, but certainly made her uncomfortable.

Additionally, there is a decent amount of video of Joe being creepy towards other women/girls he doesn’t know in professional settings (the part at 1:30 in the video was tough to watch with the 15 year old girl).

This kind of behavior is certainly not in the same category as what a politician like Roy Moore has been accused of. However, it’s still clearly inappropriate. Joe doesn’t know these women, but still decided to get all touchy-feely without getting consent first. This is especially unacceptable at professional events. Finally, Joe Biden was VP in many of these instances so there is a clear power imbalance.

Joe Biden has been trying to fight for women’s rights and maybe this would be a good time to listen. He said he would listen in his response, but it still seemed incomplete:

“In my many years on the campaign trail and in public life, I have offered countless handshakes, hugs, expressions of affection, support and comfort,” Biden said in a statement. “And not once – never – did I believe I acted inappropriately. If it is suggested I did so, I will listen respectfully. But it was never my intention.”

I wish Joe would have gone a bit further and said something like “While it wasn’t my intention, I still made these women uncomfortable and I am very sorry for my behavior. I will listen to their stories and reflect on how I can behave more professionally and make women feel more comfortable in these settings.”

I think that would certainly help, but we didn’t even get that far before liberals were defending Joe’s behavior. If you go on any social media platform, you’ll see many liberals defend Biden with terrible arguments. These arguments basically boil down to 1) He wasn’t creepy towards me and 2) It wasn’t his intention to be creepy. Neither argument is acceptable. And both arguments have been made when conservatives were accused of misconduct; however, liberals rightly called out such bad arguments.

Any liberal defending Joe Biden with such arguments is simply being hypocritical. Alyssa Milano, a liberal who has been vocal about supporting the #metoo movement, is a great example of hypocrisy. In her tweets defending Biden, she mentions how he is a friend of hers and she has seen him be a good ally to women. She also goes on to say that it was never his intent to be creepy.

This is a bummer. Alyssa clearly wants to support Joe. And the thing is, she can support him while ALSO calling out his behavior. Instead of just dismissing Joe’s creepy behavior because it wasn’t his intent, why not talk with her friend Joe about how he still made women uncomfortable? If he is such a great ally, wouldn’t it be easy for him to own his mistake and move forward?

Again, what Biden was accused of is not in the same category as someone like Kavanaugh or Roy Moore. That doesn’t mean that it’s completely harmless either. We can call out inappropriate behavior and also give people an opportunity to learn from their mistakes. I don’t think blindly defending the behavior of people we like will be productive in the long run if the goal is to change the culture around consent and boundaries. I wish more liberals would reflect on their hypocrisy.
