Buddhafield Festival is a unique and vibrant music and environment festival that takes place in the Blackdown Hills near Taunton (Somerset, UK) every year in July – usually the week before the school holidays start. It is a drug and alcohol-free festival, child-friendly (with a fabulous play area for kids) and a lot of fun. It is also entirely vegetarian/vegan. I have been going along since 2012, but some regulars have been attending since the festival started more than 20 years ago.
The festival attracts around 3000-4000 people, and many of them remain high on love, fun and dancing from the opening ceremony on Wednesday night through to the ending on Sundays.
This year was my first time presenting at the festival, a friend asked me to speak on the Genius Loci, so I did. I am not entirely sure that those who came along quite expected the history lesson in local faerie and how to communicate with spirits of the place – I suspect they were expecting something with a bit more glitter. All the same, I hope that I inspired at least a couple to do a bit more thinking about local spirits of place.
Because of childcare hicups, I was only able to attend bits of the festival this year, as I had to come home at times. However, as always there was a lot to do, see and experience. My son loved being there on the Sunday, the children’s area, the circus skills workshops, the music and the people who go the extra mile makes it a special place for him. Buddhafield is a sensory explosion of colour, smells, sounds and tastes – and an inspiring place to be.
