Well, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle.  A honest to goodness case of whites being disenfranchised by minorities! White Power types must be ecstatic at finally having a case–however isolated and utterly atypical it may be–to cite as they spin their lurid tales of minorities taking over America under the guise of multiculturalism and affirmative action. Get back to me when there are more young Caucasian men in prison than in college, knuckleheads. Whites Faced Election Bias In Mississippi, Judge Rules... Read more

Or more precisely: How to blog without wasting eons of time you don’t have to begin with. Am still deliberating–with the glacial but, I think, dignified pace of an Ent pondering weighty matters–the fate of my blog and general engagement in the Blogosphere. I very much enjoy exchanging ideas with kindred spirits and blogging is a hard habit to kick. Especially after you’ve watched something like "Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism", as I did recently.  Timely activist documentaries of... Read more

Grew up in Boston, but lived for a while in the Ying to Vermont’s Yang, New Hampshire. I remember people complaining about other New Englanders driving up during the Fall and crawling along backroads while they gawked at pretty foliage with their heads out the windows. They called ’em "leaf peepers". Vermont has a more familiar type of "peeping". Faith and Theology has uncovered the secret of European civilization, and our lack thereof: chocolate. Faith and Theology: A theology of chocolate To enter a little French or Swiss chocolaterie – the sight! the smells! mon Dieu, the taste! – is one of life’s most sublime experiences. The development of existentialist philosophy in France and of neo-orthodox theology in Switzerland can, in my view, be traced directly to the quality of the chocolates of those regions. (On the other hand,... Read more

If you haven’t seen "Sicko", Michael Moore’s courageous and pioneering documentary on American health care or lack thereof, please get out there and support it while it’s in the theaters. CNN’s "Situation Room" ran a hatchet job by media medical expert and, it appears, healthcare industry lobbyist, Sanjay Gupta. The invaluable media watchdog Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) has an alert on Gupta misinformed spin. I was so disgusted that I called CNN and sent an email, included below.... Read more

I posted a query on Eteraz.org. Eteraz.org || An "Answering Islamophobia" Wiki? I know there are a number of websites out there that counter myths and propaganda about Islam, but are there any that are any that facilitate Wiki-style decentralized collaboration?   I’m sure I’m not the only person here who has often found himself reinventing the wheel (not to mention wasting limited time) when responding to all these Islamobhopic canards that masquerade as common sense in the Blogosphere. There’s more. Read more

There’s an article in Nirali Magazine called “The United Colors of Desi” on South Asian women who marry across racial lines. Shabana is one of the women mentioned, and it includes a nice picture of the three of us, the taking of which required me to hunch over like Quasimodo. Read more

Just came across a handy program called VerbAce that looks up words in Arabic or English and supplies related words with the click of a mouse. I’ve noticed that it doesn’t work equally well with all Arabic-language sites. For example, it works like a charm with the Arabic version of IslamOnline.net, but is (through no fault of its own, I think) useless with Egypt’s Al-Ahram.  It doesn’t integrate as seamlessly with Al-Watan Al-Arabi, but does the trick if you manually... Read more

Watched the controversial "Jesus Camp" documentary yesterday. I found it engrossing, and I must say that I find myself somehow disagreeing with everybody (critic as well as supporter) in the media on this. On the one hand, I find these children infinitely more sympathetic and profound than did the many commentators in the MSM who’ve sounded the alarm of fundamentalist take-over after watching this movie. Nor do I think hysterics about militia training camps are warranted because some kids do... Read more

Came across MAS’s wonderful collection of downloadable lectures. Two lecture series that looked particularly interesting: "Fiqh for Muslim Minorities" by Dr. Hisham Abdallah and "The History of Islamic Law" by Imam Suhaib Webb. Their server is a bit slow (or perhaps it’s being hit hard at the moment), but it’ll load if you’re patient. The catch phrase on the site is "You could listen for hours!" I intend to. This is a wonderful service to the community. Kudos to MAS... Read more
