Some shrill ex-Muslim blogger Isaac Schrödinger didn’t appreciate my bursting the bubble of the ludicrous Secular Islam Summit: By the way, what does "self-hating" mean? Does a person who is born in a Muslim family and then later leaves Islam — and is vocal about the issue — hate him/herself? I do understand the schizophrenic part: Western liberty and Islam don’t mix. For those interested, I ended up having a lively exchange with him and his Islamophobe buddies in the... Read more

Shabana writes poems, I read them (well, once in a while, alas). I came across this beautiful and intriguing poem from Cola Franzen’s compilation Poems of Arab Andalusia by the late 10th century Andalusian poet Ahmad Ibn Faraj on love, comportment and self-restraint and was absolutely blown away, especially by the last three stanzas.  Whew, what incredibly vivid (and sensuous) imagery, juxtaposed against the purest sentiments of chastity and adoration. Although she was ready to giveherself to me, I abstainedand... Read more

A neat new site for students of Arabic, Arabic Word A Day. Here’s an example: (كمل) – kamula, Kamila, & Kamala* – verbDefinitions: to become whole, entire to be finished, done to be concluded, come to a close, to reach Examples: kamala al-kitab (كمل الكتاب); The book has finished. kamula Nisa_bu ‘l-Zakati ‘indi (كمل نصاب الزكاة عندي); I’ve reached the limit for zakat liability. My comment on a discussion on ‘Aqoul of curmudeon with messianic delusions Tarek Fatah’s nasty and intellectually dishonest broadside [see below for HT] against "Little Mosque on the Prairie". Fatah complains that his kind of Muslim  (like what, Wafa Sultan?) isn’t adequately represented on the show and goes so far as to absurdly imply Islamist sympathies in  its creator,  who made the hard-hitting but balance documentary of gender discrimination in mosques  "Me and the Mosque". ‘Aqoul: Tarek Fatah on Little... Read more

Just posted something on Eteraz.org on an example of Wafa Sultan’s palpable ignorance.  Eteraz.org || The quackery of Dr. Wafa Sultan on Muslim church burnings This quote culled from a vacuous Wall Street Journal writeup  [HT: The Jawa Report] of the so-called Summit of Secular Islam […] perfectly captures the ignorance, shallowness and in some cases bald mendacity of the "insider" critiques of Islam being peddled by the ex-Muslim dissidents increasingly championed by the far right as reformers. Bret Stephens... Read more

Ever wonder how Monty Python would’ve discussed Islam and Muslims?  Wonder no more.  Behold the upcoming Secular Islam Summit, wherein an assortment of people with Muslim-sounding names are going to–drum roll, please–"chart the future course of reason, pluralism, and freedom of conscience in the Islamic world". Some folks in the MSM appear to be excited about this millennial gathering, including CNN Headline News’ Glenn Beck, who announced that he’d be broadcasting his show from the summit.  The shindig has thus... Read more

I blogged recently about some media reports that medical benefits had been demonstrated for the practice of male circumcision in studies in Africa.  Just came across an article in CounterPunch by David Rosen on the debate that provided a curious and bizarre detail of which I was utterly (and blissfully) unaware. There is, he says, "growing use of the male foreskin in female beauty products".  As in face creams.  Sorry for the gory details, but it appears that disgarded foreskins... Read more

Haven’t seen it yet, but this looks promising. I was sold as soon as I saw the tagline! "A little singing, a little dancing, a lot of hummus."  West Bank Story A musical comedy set in the fast-paced, fast-food world of competing falafel stands in the West Bank… David, an Israeli soldier, falls in love with the beautiful Palestinian cashier, Fatima, despite the animosity between their families’ dueling restaurants. Can the couple’s love withstand a 2000 year old conflict and... Read more

I don’t have time to comment at length, but check out this gem of neo-colonial paternalism, unvarnished prejudice and ironic sexism from the youth wing of the hardline Danish People’s Party.  They have launched a campaign directed towards Muslim women entitled "Free yourselves" ("Befri jer selv").  They’re referring to Islam, of course. You can order a poster and get postcards for spreading the good news that they are waiting with open arms to receive Muslim women exiting Islam. Below is... Read more

Danish journalist Jakob Illeborg has penned a balanced and insightful reflection in The Guardian Unlimited on the lingering legacy in Denmark of the Jyllands-Posten cartoons that roiled the known universe a year ago.  My only complaint is that he didn’t explicitly acknowledge how intensely political the affair was from the outset.  It never was simply about freedom of speech, and the affair’s architects’ professed  motivations have become increasingly hard to swallow as more information about them, past and present, has... Read more
