Amy Grant’s Grown Up Christmas List

Amy Grant’s Grown Up Christmas List 2022-12-23T18:11:16-06:00

I have now been asked this question five times, “Julie, how can you support Amy Grant’s decision to host her niece’s lesbian wedding?”  As I will say again, my support of the LGBTQ+ community has nothing to do with sexual activity, which is none of my business, but the Sanctity of Life and the Dignity of the Human Person which are core tenets of Catholic Social Teaching.  By Amy Grant showing unconditional love, she is placing the sanctity of her niece’s life and her human dignity above all.  Every major medical association in the world says that family acceptance is life and death. A life-long monogamous relationship extends someone’s lifespan and improves overall health for any couple.  Knowing how important legal protections are to shield LGBTQ people from the horrific cruelty, including death threats, that’s collectively more important to combine Catholic Social Teaching as a Catholic Christian than being “right” about which sex acts a couple performs which is none of my business.

“Okay Julie, but same-sex marriage goes against the teachings of the Church.” Amy Grant is not even attempting to officiate a Catholic marriage. She technically is following Pope Francis’s beliefs to offer crucial legal protections for same-sex couples. And knowing that LGBTQ+ people are on the “hitlist” of groups that fascists want to target and eliminate, the more legal protections of LGBGTIA+ people and their families, the better.  This is about Right-to-Life, not sexual activity.

“But Julie, how are you sure about all of this? Isn’t the medical opinion just your professional opinion?”  Well, if I as a practitioner want to buck every major medical association in the world, I would be an absolute arrogant fool. Here is a video list of just the American Medical groups which support the affirmation of LGBTQIA+ people and gender affirming care.

As a practitioner, I aligned my practice with the worldwide medical consensus because life depends on it, and again, I would be an absolute fool as a practitioner.  I don’t expect the medical consensus to align with any religious organization although they all align with the Sanctity of Life and the Dignity of the Human Person when they support affirmation of LGBTQ+ people and their families.

As for Amy Grant’s Grown-Up Christmas list, she is asking for “lives not torn apart, wars would never start, time would heal all hearts, everyone would have a friend, good would always win, and love would never end.”  I would say she is following her conscience when it comes to her niece.  But since she isn’t Catholic, I can say undoubtedly say that she is following almost every tenet of Catholic Social Teaching, especially when family acceptance for LGBTQ+ people is statistically life and death. If Pope Francis can support full legal protections for LGBTQ+ people, so can I.
