I have come to the conclusion that it’s very difficult to hold a moderate position on a number of issues. Our country is very polarized where people in the middle have a hard time fitting in. But when it boils down to it, I would rather lean on the side of compassion and love than standards and forcing conformity. People may make decisions I wouldn’t make, and that’s ok. People may make decisions that I secretly think are morally wrong, but as long as they aren’t hurting anyone else, and this includes the decision to have an abortion at any stage because this is bodily autonomy, I do not think it is anyone else’ place to interject. Over 97% of abortions happen within the first 20 weeks anyway.
Over the last five years, I’ve had a crash course via live experiences in understanding LGBTQ+ rights and reproductive healthcare. With my conservative background, I had to see some things for myself firsthand to understand. For over five decades, the abortion issue and sexuality issues have been used as conditioning tools for political power and gain through a toxic mix of church and state. This has affected the hearts and minds of many and did mine for years. Thankfully, I started waking up during the Trump era and became a prolife Democrat and then a prochoice Democrat a year before Roe v Wade was overturned. It’s never too late.
If we look back to World War II, we can find some similar patterns. I don’t think anyone knows just how long Christian Nationalism has been brewing more than liberal Catholics from within the Catholic Church. They’ve been battling the Catholic Right joined with other right-winged forces for decades in an attempt to overtake the government to enforce wildly unpopular minority agendas. These would include Trump abortion bans which criminalize abortion and place mothers’ lives and health at risk, bans on IVF, and other bans which the Catholic hierarchy deems as “immoral.” They want a national abortion ban which must be stopped.
