When politics are killing people and especially in unacceptable numbers, it is no longer a political issue or a difference of opinion; it is a moral failure. It is also moral failure to turn a blind eye and not even discuss it.
When Latino people with no criminal record are being kidnapped off the streets, sent to concentration camps, and being ripped away from their families with no due process, this is no longer political or a difference of opinion; it’s a moral failure. When 11-15 million people are being kicked off of their healthcare due to Medicaid cuts where many will die, including disabled children, this is no longer political or a difference of opinion; it is a moral failure. When rural hospitals and nursing homes on limited budgets are closing due to cuts in Medicaid and Medicare, and more elderly and sick people are dying, this is no longer political or a difference of opinion; it is a moral failure. When Veterans’ benefits are being stripped after they have served our country; this is no longer political or a difference of opinion; it’s a moral failure. When food and water assistance are cut to make hungry and thirsty people starve and die, this is no longer political or a difference of opinion; it is a moral failure. When laws and policies are being weaponized to target groups of people like LGBTQ+ people to make life more dangerous for them, this is no longer political or a difference of opinion; it is a moral failure.
When Reverse Robinhood economics takes from the poorest to give more of a tax break to the top 20%, this is no longer political or a difference of opinion; it is a moral failure. These are moral failures because people are dying, and the majority is suffering. And don’t say it’s not the responsibility of the government because neither non profit, nor the church, nor the government alone has the capacity to care for the vulnerable. They must work together for the common good of all people and not “thin the herd” through social murder as the Trump regime is doing right now. It is a moral failure for people with extravagant resources and major corporations to receive tax cuts at the expense of the struggling majority. It’s also a moral failure to equate “thinning the herd” to Christianity.
For the religious person and especially the Christian, this should be particularly convicting. Every major world religion teaches to care for the vulnerable, love our neighbor as ourselves, and do unto others are you would have them do unto you.
Let’s see what Jesus says in Matthew Chapter 25.
42 For I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me. I was thirsty, and you didn’t give me a drink. 43 I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me into your home. I was naked, and you didn’t give me clothing. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’
44 “Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?’
45 “And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’
