What is God’s will for your life?

Quick Answer: “Are you in God’s will? Are you making sure to stay in God’s will? You don’t want to fall out of God’s will!” It’s this sort of teaching that can really paralyze a person. What is God’s will for your life? Scripture actually tells us! God’s will is that we give thanks, talk to our Heavenly Father, and bear the fruit of the Spirit. In short, God’s will is knowing and expressing Jesus. And there’s no falling in and out of God’s will either. God never intended us to fall prey to such an idea. God’s will is Jesus, and since you’re always in Him, you’ll never fall out!

Diving Deeper: We’ve all heard the teaching that we need to get in God’s will, and then try to stay in God’s will, so we don’t “fall out” of God’s will! What house? What spouse? What job? What car? Trying to find God’s will could seem burdensome and ultimately, paralyzing. Thankfully, Scripture paints a different picture of God’s will. In short, the will of God is that we know Jesus and express Him in every circumstance.

Scripture offers some important insights into God’s will. First, God doesn’t want anyone to perish but all to believe (2 Peter 3:9). Second, God wills for His children to “rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). Lastly, John 15:8 states that God desires for us to “bear much fruit” (see also Galatians 5:22-23).

In conclusion, God wants us to know and express His Son. As we make decisions, whether they are big or small, remember that God is behind every door because Christ lives in you and works all things together for your good (Romans 8:28). Life is not about making all the “perfect” decisions every time. God uses all our decisions, good and bad, and forms them into beautiful expressions of His grace over time.
