Why Do Men Prefer to Watch Football Rather Than Go To Church? November 21, 2023

Why Do Men Prefer to Watch Football Rather Than Go to Church?

Why do men prefer to stay home on Sundays to watch football rather than go to church? As a man who previously neglected going to church, I will share insight on some of the possible reasons:

  • Many sermons are directed to the emotional side of humanity, which most men tend to avoid.
  • A lot of men mistakenly think God wants to condemn them of their shortcomings.

Attending Church Provokes Boys to Become Men

Football games on television remind men of a time when we were innocent boys playing sandlot football. Attending church introduces us to a heavy dose of reality- we are no longer boys who can play every day, but men with responsibilities.  This concept can be found in I Corinthians 13: 11- “When I was child, I thought as a child, but when I became a man, I put away childish things.”

As a Man Thinks So Is He

When I look back at my life before I got saved, I recognize the difference between how I thought then and how I think now. The scripture, “As a man thinks so is He (Proverbs 23:7)” accurately describes the mindset I use to have. If we are honest with ourselves, most of us men think we know it all until we find out we don’t.  In other words, until our minds are renewed by the Word of God, our belief system as young men come from our previous surroundings.  As the old phrase says, “the blind can’t lead the blind.”

Overcoming Peer Pressure

From childhood, men embrace camaraderie. So, fitting in with their homeboys seems like the most important thing in the world. Our biggest challenge is overcoming peer pressure.  We do stupid things to impress our childhood friends. I remember accepting a challenge from my neighborhood friends that I got a deep cut that required many stitches. The scar remains to this day. Had I listened to my first mind (The Holy Spirit), I would have avoided getting injured.

The Holy Spirit is Like a Head Coach

Every winning football player has a head coach to help them win the game. Jesus tells His Disciples that the Holy Spirit will guide and lead them into all truth and show them things to come (John 16:13). He is a Helper and a Comforter. As men, we need all the help we can get to lead our families to victory.  In my life purpose workshops, Quarterback Daddy Huddle, I share my personal testimony of how God forgave me for dropping the ball and throwing interceptions in my life.  I am so thankful He gave me another chance to lead my team.

Going To Church Gets You in The Game of Life

If there is any advice I can offer, it would be the same one my mother gave to me- You are not a follower. You are a leader. It may be fun to watch the game with your boys, but being a spectator while your favorite players live out their dream pales in comparison to you becoming a man who God calls to play on His winning team. Joining a church that teaches the Word of God will gradually cause you to become the leader that you desire to be.
