Sun Magic: Sunrise and Sunset Spells

Sun phases for magic

And just like the moon the sun has phases which can be used to tie in with your magical workings to add an extra boost of power.  The sun measures time, where it sits in the sky denotes what time of the day it is, and a sun dial would be quite useless without the sun to cast a shadow!  I also think that point between night and day and vice versa, that moment of hand over is quite special.

Sunrise – Basically when the sun wakes up and peers over the horizon.  This phase is all about new beginnings, changes, health, employment, renewal, resurrection and finding the right direction. It can also be very cleansing.

The morning – This is when the sun is growing in strength, so it brings the magical power for growth, positive energy, resolutions, courage, harmony, happiness, strength, activity, building projects and plans, prosperity and expansion of ideas.

High noon – When the sun reaches its peak in the sky at midday – work magic for health, physical energy, wisdom and knowledge. It is also a good time to pop your tools or crystals out that need charging.  (Note: some crystals can fade in strong sunlight so check first before putting them out).

The afternoon – The sun is heading back down, and the energy now is good for working on business matters, communication, clarity, travel, exploring and anything professional.

Sunset – As the sun takes itself off down below the horizon, work magic for removing depression, stress and confusion, letting go, releasing or finding out the truth of a situation.

A sunset releasing spell

Either sit outside so that you can see the sunset or get in a position where you can see it through your window.

You will need:

Four candles – colours of your choice but I suggest tying them in with the colours of a sunset (yellow, orange, pink and red). If you don’t have coloured candles, white will be fine.

Four slips of paper and a pen

Fireproof dish

Light all four candles.

Write down on each slip of paper what it is you would like to let go of.  It only needs to be a word or two.

Set fire to a slip of paper from the first candle and pop it in the fireproof dish to burn.  Take another slip of paper and set fire to it from the second candle and pop it in the dish to burn.  Repeat with the third and fourth candle.

You might like to say a chant each time, or just request out loud what your intent is.

Then snuff out the candles in reverse order.

Finally look towards the sun as it sets below the horizon and say out loud “the end of my woes, ready for the beginning of a new day”.

A sunrise fresh start spell

Using the sunset spell as a template, you can work the spell as the sun begins to rise at the beginning of the day, using the intent for new beginnings or a fresh start.

You will need:

Four candles – colours of your choice but I suggest tying them in with the colours of a sunrise (pale yellow, white, baby pink and pale blue). If you don’t have coloured candles, white will be fine.

Four slips of paper and a pen

Fireproof dish

Light all four candles.

Write down on each slip of paper what it is you would like to start, a new project, a fresh beginning or something you would like to increase.

Finally look towards the sun as it rises and say out loud “as the sun begins to rise, new beginnings and fresh starts I surmise”.  Or something much better than my meagre poetry skills can manage!
