The Baptism of Jesus

The Baptism of Jesus

This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

-Matthew 3:17
John saw Jesus coming to him; and he saith: Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who taketh away the sin of the world.

Satan surely thought he was foolish. St. John, the Baptist obviously thought himself unworthy. But the Father was well-pleased. The second Adam humbled himself to being baptized for sins he never committed. But also proved himself to be the Perfect Adam.

As with much of what Jesus did that seems odd, it is also an instruction for us to follow. He was baptized, went off and confronted Satan, then started his ministry in earnest. But we are too embarrassed to mention Holy Mass at the water cooler on Monday.

The icing on the cake? The Father speaking and the Holy Spirit descending. Hallelujah.

Holy Triune God, please send the Holy Spirit down upon us. Make us the warriors we are Confirmed to be as we wander through this desert you have seen fit to blow away our own personal chaff. There is no armor greater than the Paraclete, and no sword sharper than the name of Christ Jesus. We pray these things in union with all the sanctified warriors that have gone before us. Amen.
