National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day

Today, October 15th, is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. On this day parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles around the nation pray for and remember their babies lost during and after pregnancy.

We have advocates in our corner already in Heaven.

While Our Mother never lost an infant to this tragedy, she certainly is someone we can turn to when we are being torn apart by grief, guilt, anger, and the entire raft of emotions that come with such a terrible loss. She did lose her son: once temporarily in the Temple, and once temporarily on Calvary. Now that the oldest Marian Shrine in the United States recently being elevated to the status of National Shrine, now is a great time to turn to Our Lady of le Leche.

Saint Cardinal Newman is another great intercessor regarding pregnancy. He interceded on behalf of Melissa Villalobos’ life and pregnancy in 2014, resulting in a miracle from God. He will assuredly do the same for all of us who have lost children, too.

Finally there is Saint Catherine of Siena, patroness of impossible cases and miscarriages. While never an earthly mother, she lived out a mother’s heart and continues to do so on behalf of all of us here on earth.

Prayer for understanding and healing after miscarriage or infant loss

Oh Uncreated Creator, Lord of Lords, our Father, we come to you broken-hearted and angry. Why have you allowed this to happen to your servants? Please turn your face to shine on us; let us feel your warmth; let us abide in you. We do not understand it, do not like it and do not want it. But please, Oh Lord, help us understand. Help us accept. Help us thrive. No evil can ever happen that you cannot use as rich fertilizer for our growth. Let us bloom. Let us spread your joy and love. And let our babies pray for us constantly, until we are reunited in your Beatific Vision. With Saint Cardinal Newman, Saint Catherine of Siena, and especially Our Lady of le Leche, we pray to you. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
