Dear New Family, First, let me apologize for my one accident the other day in the kitchen and thank you for not getting mad at me. At least it was linoleum 😉 With a little refresher, I have done much better since then, so thank you for the rather boisterous cheering as I have been doing my business during our walk time. Oh and thanks for my new name, “Fawn” short for some lady human named, “Farrah FAWNcett.” I think it captures... Read more

[image: KCIvey] For my non-San Francisco readers, I apologize for back-to-back San Francisco-centric* posts. What can I say, I simply love my city, affectionately known in our house as “the progressive bubble within which we choose to live.” Come for a visit sometime, it’s awesome. As you know, one of the things that I am very interested in is the political landscape of our city. A place where elections often pit “the left against the lefter” San Francisco is both an target for those who hold a... Read more

With this post, I am beginning a new series called “My San Francisco” where I will periodically share pictures from events and districts around San Francisco.  There is a little more info here, but suffice it to say that I am not trying to provide a comprehensive look into any gathering or neighborhood, but rather to provide a small glimpse into the complex San Francisco landscape. This week, I decided on spending about an hour walking around the Excelsior District of San Francisco. I... Read more

There is a fine line between name-calling and truth-telling: one is about tearing down the dignity of another human being and the other is about speaking a position or belief that helps move a body forward in positive ways. If we are going to move forward as a society, we must do all that we can to avoid confusing the two. Nowhere has this tension been more evident than in recent conversations about the religious backgrounds of some of the Republican presidential candidates. Now I know... Read more

Last year, as my three daughters left for their first day of school, I let you all in on a little tradition in our home, New Shoes and the First Day of School. Somehow the clock kept moving forward and today marks the beginning of  the next school year here in San Francisco.  I get all teary, because it seems as though every first day is one more reminder of both the gift that it is to nurture and shape our... Read more

If you are like many people from around the globe, you have been jolted out of your slumber in the middle of the night by the sudden realization that I have not been blogging much this summer. I know it’s been tough, but I trust you have persevered and somehow managed to make it one day to the next. Now, if this is not the case, please do not bother to let me know because, like most bloggers I am... Read more

If you are like me, this past few days of punditry and chatter surrounding the debt ceiling debate has been quite overwhelming. I was actually in DC this past week on family vacation, but being totally drawn into sharing our national capitol with my kids for the first time I somehow managed to escape total saturation 😉  Still, can’t avoid these things for long, so I thought I would offer up some thoughts. Now before anyone accuses me of trying to speak for all of Christendom,... Read more

I heart church camp. From my days growing up attending Zephyr Point Conference Center, to gathering for events at Stoney Point, Ghost Ranch, Westminster Woods, Mo-Ranch and The Heartland Center, I am so grateful for the history and ministry of Presbyterian-related camps and conferences. The impact that conference centers such as these have had on my own life and the lives of so many people over the years is immeasurable to say the least.  Go camps and conferences!* For the past two weeks, I... Read more

The Google+ roll-out continues with mixed reaction. Some are certainly frustrated by the inability to actually join, thus reinforcing Google’s ability to create an atmosphere of scarcity while others are fully jumping in hoping that this might indeed be a viable alternative to privacy-fickly facebook. Big “ups” to those who have been oozing serious social media mojo and are maintaining twitter and facebook interactions all the while diving head first into Google+. If there were social media geek badges to hand out, you would all get one... Read more

After a few of my recent posts have inspired some, let’s just call it “passionate” debate [same sex marriage & gun violence] I figured I should play it a little safe with this one.  I will say that while a vast majority of the comments and interaction have been pretty civil, I have received private messages that have been slightly disturbing.  It does sadden me that it seems as if society can no longer see that moving towards the improvement... Read more
