One of the Christian fellowship groups at Princeton had (and perhaps still has) a really neat tradition, in which the graduating seniors would stand in front of the group during the last meeting of the year and impart a small bit of wisdom to the younger classes. I don’t remember exactly what I or others said, but I will never forget the feeling of warmth and fellowship in that room during those “good-bye” meetings. What I loved about this tradition... Read more

So rosy is the glow of the season that we’ll send Cliff Lee back to Philly with a big bow on top while we drown our sorrows in Texas in a big mug of egg nog. Red and the MaryAlice family will have much to rejoice in this Christmas (and baseball) season. Happy Feast Day! The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is a Marian Feast Day, in which we honor the Blessed Virgin Mary and remember that she was conceived without the stain of original sin. This means that, from the first moment of her existence, Mary was set apart by God because she was to be the Mother of Our Savior. Because she was fully human just like all of us, she is the perfect model of womanhood for all of... Read more

My first baby is 9 years old, and I have been thinking about how that means that I am midway through parenting him.  9 years more, and he will be 18, moving out and heading to college, making his own choices and finding his way in the world.  Of course, I will always be his mother, and I know that my parents continue to parent me, in different ways, now that I am an adult child, but the really intense... Read more
