One of the best things you can do for yourself in the morning is to carve out five minutes in your daily routine for a bit of spiritual reading. One book I find myself turning to time and again is Mark Nepo’s Book of Awakening, comprised of short meditations, thoughts, and quotes to start the day. There are countless other texts with affirmations or meditations, but really, anything nonfiction that feeds your soul would be a good choice for your morning reading. Lately, I’ve been reading Amy Ahler’s Big Fat Lies Women Tell Themselves, and I’ve noticed that simply starting my day in a receptive, thoughtful place, prompted by the works of whichever author I choose, has had an impact on the course of my day. When I allow life to get in the way and I skip my morning reading, I’m cranky, tightly wound, and more tired. I just have to remind myself that, no matter the demands of the day, I can spare five minutes for the well-being of my mind and soul.
What will you make time for in your morning routine?
