I stepped out onto the porch in the pre-dawn darkness this morning, and the sense of magic and anticipation was palpable. After a taste of a couple of crisp autumn days last month, temperatures climbed again, and the past week has been wet, muggy, and miserable. But this morning, the air is cool, the breeze is up, and it really and truly feels like fall has arrived.

Maybe you could already tell, but this is my favorite time of year. I love breaking out my layers and scarves without the bundling of winter, and crunching through leaves still gives me the biggest, most childlike thrill. Halloween has always been my favorite holiday, and the entire month of October fills me with anticipation and possibility.

October is also the time I feel the most classically “witchy” (and not just because I usually don a pointed hat for Halloween). I’m not entirely sure why, but my sense of magic is heightened at this time, and where I usually strive to consciously incorporate magic into my days, in October it feels like I just have to open my arms and let it surround me.

There’s just something about this time of year.

This month, I’m going to dance in the leaves, light yellow and orange candles whenever the urge strikes, and say yes to pumpkin everything. I’m also going to set aside my worries and rigid, type-A control issues (as much as I can) and allow the magic of the month to sweep me along. In 31 days, I know I’ll be decked in black and wishing I could fly, but in the meantime, I’m opening my arms to the unexpected and magical possibilities of October.

Let’s play, shall we?
