I really enjoy books that can keep my eyes and heart focused on Jesus and this one does just that.  Sacred Reading: The 2017 Guide to Daily Prayer by Douglas Leonard, the Executive Director of Apostleship of Prayer, allows the reader to delve into the “powerful, ancient form of prayer known as sacred reading (lectio divina) that invites communion with God through scripture reading and contemplation.”  Throughout the entire Church year the reader is presented daily with a gospel reading with which to pray.  This gets you started, but Mr. Leonard also helps the reader to observe, pray, listen, and resolve to act.

Each daily reading contains six sections.  The first section is titled “Know that God is present with you and ready to converse.”   It is a prayer prompt that allows the reader to respond and pray in their own way. The second part is the daily gospel reading which may reference, if necessary, a solemnity, feast, or a memorial.  Thirdly, Mr. Leonard asks the reader to notice their thoughts and feelings as the gospel was read.  Here is where the author summarizes the reading or makes an interesting point to reflect upon.  The fourth section is another prayer prompt, based upon the gospel reading, guiding the reader to pray for themselves and others. Part five encourages the reader to listen to what Jesus is saying and the author graciously includes the words he felt impressed upon his own heart as he prayed with the readings. (It is really very beautiful.)  And finally, part six is another prayer prompt petitioning God to show the reader how to live out the message of the gospel reading.

A hearty thank you goes out to Apostleship of Prayer –“the Pope’s worldwide prayer network”- for developing this lovely book.  It is a “must buy” for yourself and loved ones who are seeking a closer relationship with Our Lord.  Be aware, however, that this book actually starts on the first day of Advent, November 27th, so don’t delay in picking up a copy.
