Should I Watch “The Chosen”?

Should I Watch “The Chosen”? March 11, 2024

Are we ready for the newest season of The Chosen? Are we caught up in past seasons? Have we bought the theater tickets in preparation? Or do we plan on binging on streaming? This is the wrong time to mention that I’m a bit behind.

By about two seasons. Plus, another season.

Who has the time to watch TV these days? Work, kids, church, YouTube shorts, wait … I mean Bible reading. Yes, that.

But seriously, how important is it for me to click over and take a gander at this series? I have three more seasons of Friends to watch. Will Rachel and Ross ever get married? And stay together? Will Joey ever know how I’m doing? Will Gunther sell out and become a barista at Starbucks?

However, I can’t get away from The Chosen. Mark Wahlberg is now doing commercials about prayer with the hippie Jesus dude. They want me to take a moment to pray. Next, I’ll be asked to check out a few episodes of The Chosen.

So, I’ve decided to take it upon myself to take the bullet for those of you who haven’t seen The Chosen yet. And if I’m honest, I really am curious to see what all the hoopla is about. I saw The Passion of the Christ. I know how it ends. We had a Nativity scene at my church, so I know how it begins.

Am I the only one who fears walking through the church’s foyer? I see them—the rabid fans—the ones not afraid to approach and begin a conversation. You know the ones I speak of—the fearless evangelicals—the ones who would have been recruited to go door to door in days past.

Them.

They watch for an opening to discuss this show that has become a cultural and global phenomenon. The early days of Christ’s ministry and a character-driven drama unafraid to dive into who these biblical people were. I’ve read my Bible. How much insight can I get?

Well, from the broad audience and all the streaming companies airing previous seasons, it may actually be worth a little peek. Not a long, drawn-out, episodic grind. Perhaps an episode or two. A small window of opportunity for this lauded series to hook me with a tale I know so well.

Am I the only one who has managed to avoid catching sight of this series? If I am, then I want to challenge you. I don’t want to be the only one who may be forced to watch an atrocious and boring series based on content I know pretty well. I go to church regularly, so I could be considered an expert witness, right?

The deal. I will go watch the first two episodes. You go watch the first two episodes. And in five days, we’ll meet back right here and see what we think. Is it worth our time to be mildly amused? Maybe we can learn some unknown insight. Or we may be bored to tears and be more than willing to accidentally spill our coffee on the next church member who wants to praise this series from the Gospels.

The gauntlet has been laid. It’s time to prove them all wrong. Or, we may have been ill-informed in our decision-making regarding the series. This week, we find out how inspiring this little show truly is. Remember to come back Friday and read my spoilery review of The Chosen, Season One, Episodes One and Two.

Until then, avoid those fans until we can disprove or join them.

Your mission, should you accept it: watch The Chosen.

This message will now self destruct in five. Four. Three. Two. One. Just kidding.
