It’s true: the most glorious season of all has arrived in all its light-filled, BBQ-everything glory. I’m talking about summer, of course, and for those of us who are readers, there’s something extra magical about that thing called summer reading.
Between rasslin’ the kids and applying extra sunblock and running circles around cozy wintry vibes, we sneak peeks at a stack of books we’ve been eying for months. And when the time finally comes to lay on the beach towel and sneak in a page here and there, something inside us beams.
Who wants to waste their time on reruns with an unopened book begs our attention? Who wants to sit inside a stuffy, air-conditioned house when you can snuggle up in a camping chair next to a crackling fire and dive into a much-anticipated library hold?
A summer reader, that’s who.
If summer reading is your thing, share in the glory! Tell us what you’ll be hunkering down with this summer. As per me, here are ten books I hope and plan and think I’ll crack open in the coming months …but as per the usual, if the reading muse takes me elsewhere, I’ll have to follow her lead.
Fiction:
The Sky is Everywhere (Jandy Nelson) – YA + one of my favorite YA authors? Absolutely!
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine (Gail Honeyman) – I call this the perfect beach read.
Forward Me Back to You (Mitali Perkins) – Local friends, check out my website for an upcoming event in November with Mitali!
The Dry (Jane Harper) – Modern Mrs. Darcy made me do it.
Love Medicine (Louise Erdrich) – How have I not read anything by this esteemed author yet?
Nonfiction:
Burnout (Emily Nagoski & Amelia Nagoski) – Rather appropriate for life’s current season.
Maybe You Should Talk to Someone (Lori Gottlich) – I’ve heard such good things about this book!
May It Be So (Justin McRoberts & Scott Erickson) – Local friends, check out my website for an upcoming event in August with Justin!
Women Rise Up (Katey Zeh) – Note: free on Kindle Unlimited at the time of publication.
Notorious RBG (Irin Carmon & Shana Knizhnik) – I loved the documentary and can’t believe I still haven’t cracked open the hardback!
As you may recall, I’ve got nothing but time on my side over the next six weeks, so I’m hopeful to crack open at least a couple of these bad boys. But when it comes to summer reading, more than any other time of year, I tend to employ the “You Cannot Keep Reading a Book If It Doesn’t Captivate You” rule.
Certain seasons call for certain books – so permission granted from one reading guru to another if the books you first choose are not the books that end up floating your summer reading boat.
So, go. Be present with the humans who light your path, but be sure to tuck a much-anticipated book into your bag for those steal-away moments of deliciously perfect reading.
Enjoy!
