Can the secular left live with the traditional Christian faith

The answer, according to this piece, is a big ‘No!’.  Or ‘Nein!’ if we want to go all Barthian.  And that’s probably more realistic than thinking we’ve put that ‘not living together in peace’ behind us.  In fact, while our lips say ‘Diversity’, or actions increasingly suggest ‘Conformity!’  It wouldn’t be the first time people said they wanted one thing when, in hindsight, they clearly wanted something else.  And like the author of the piece, I believe the issue of Gay Marriage has become the wedge issue of the generation.  Back in the day, many thought abortion would be the mischief maker.  But abortion cuts across many boundaries.  I’ve known hardcore, secularist, feminist, liberals who were adamantly opposed to abortion.  I’ve known conservative evangelicals who had a moderate view of abortion limitations.

Regarding homosexuality the lines are clear and a mile thick.  Those who oppose gay marriage typically adhere to more conservative, traditional religious views, and those who support gay marriage typically accept modern, liberal religious and secular views.  It’s hard to say where it will stop.  But 30 years ago, if you said you were worried that business owners would be fined for refusing to serve a gay wedding, you’d have been laughed at even by opponents of gay rights.  Far to ludicrous to imagine.
