I date I will always remember

I date I will always remember July 21, 2016

The anniversary of our first moon landing.  I never remembered the day until seven years ago.  It was then that our fourth son was born.  In fact, that happened to be the 40th anniversary of the moon landings, and my wife began getting prepped for the birth at the minute of the actual touchdown.  I remember the anesthesiologist getting the epidural ready while the TV in the delivery room was carrying the anniversary coverage.  As the minutes got closer, he kept his eyes on the TV.  Each minute ticked away as the anticipation built, almost like it was happening for the first time.

Meanwhile, all I wanted to do was grab the fellow and say, “Will you pay attention to what you’re doing!  That’s my wife and kid!’  Heh.  I don’t bear him ill will.  That just shows that doctors are human.  My wife said the actual shot barely hurt, so she was happy he was watching the news.  I’m not an expert on giving birth or getting epidurals, but she insists not all of them went that smoothly.

As a fun note, we try each year to have MoonPies for our son’s birthday at his request.  I can’t help but think that’s a clever nod by him on his big day being shared by another big day.
