Donald McClarey, over at The American Catholic, has some great information about Columbus and Columbus Day. Read away and enjoy. I particularly like his point that while we revile the imperialist Columbus and decry the next 500 years of American settlements and colonization, we continue to laud Islam as that wonderful, beautiful religion, even as decedents of those swept away by the Turks continue to live in oppression, terror and even death. See my previous post about what this says about our concern for oppressed people now and yesterday. As I tell my boys, there is no reason to be ashamed of our heritage. It’s no worse than any other civilizations through the ages, and some of our most cherished rights and freedoms came from nowhere else in the world.
