Will Catholics who oppose Trump defend this? December 5, 2016

Here.  CNN producer caught yucking it up when someone jokes about Trump’s plane crash.   CNN has responded with ‘discipline’, though I don’t know what.  I caught it on a Facebook page.  Strangely, it isn’t getting coverage like some of the digs made at Obama over the years.   In fact, I gave up trying to find MSM coverage of this.  Only CNN, in posting its apology, has shown up.

Which is interesting.  Now, the point isn’t if it was wrong to joke about Trump’s plane crashing.  Obviously most on the Left will denounce this.  Obviously most who oppose Trump will still draw the line at laughing about potential tragedy.  I assume this about people.

But for eight long, agonizing years, especially in some corners of the Catholic blogosphere, the worst things said about Obama were immediately put out there as the standard that defined all who opposed Obama.  Unless you said abortion is technically wrong, you can’t actually have gay sex, but in all other things the Democrats and the Gospel are pretty much in line, then you were probably one who defended the Obama attacks.  You’re likely out their making excuses for the prayers for, or jokes about, Obama’s death.

Generally, most I knew who opposed Obama, at least in Catholic circles, decried the racism and the uglier attacks.  And yet, by virtue of standing against the overall Democrat/progressive movement, there was a constant suggestion that they were all in the same basket.  Anyone who dared stand with the GOP, or at least generally oppose the Democrats’ approach to issues like immigration or government welfare, were deftly put in the position of insisting they really didn’t support calls for Obama’s death.

So in fairness to consistency, and having chaffed at those who used such tactics for silencing debate and impugning anyone who didn’t agree with their own politics, I’ll not do the same.  I’m sure most on the Left, most who support Hillary, most who oppose Trump are bothered by this. I’ll certainly assume it about Catholics.  That’s basic decency.  As much as I might not agree with Clinton supporters; as much as I find certain Democratic policies to be antithetical to my faith tradition, I don’t extend that to the people.  Unless they give me reason to think otherwise.
