Last night in the last seconds of Wisconsin vs Florida.  I’ve been down with something, so was half drugged up with nighttime medications.  But even with heavy eyelids, I jumped out of my seat on this one.  And I was rooting for Wisconsin!  That’s what makes sports awesome.  Air Jordan would be proud: Read more

Just saying.  As an Evangelical, I railed against the idea that you had to somehow be in lockstep with all things Republican in order to demonstrate your bona fides.  Thankfully, to be honest, there weren’t that many who actually believed that. Well, the same is true for the Democrats.  While there are some who will obviously give a dispensation where abortion or gay marriage is concerned, there’s a slight tendency I’ve picked up on recently from the odd believer here or... Read more

Simcha Fisher reminded me that I overlooked an important day yesterday.  The 130th birthday of Chico Marx.  Read here and she’ll give you some interesting tidbits. The Marx Brothers, the first comedy troupe to successfully exploit the new invention of talking pictures, are like the Beatles.  Everyone has their favorite.  For me, it was Chico.  In life he had his problems.  Addicted to gambling, his brothers often had to bail him out.  In fact, some of their later (and far... Read more

In the wake of the terrorist attack at London yesterday, I got to thinking.  It’s horrible of course.  And my prayers for those who didn’t know it was their last day on earth.  Also prayers for their loved ones and those who are left behind. But here’s something else that hit me.  Listening to Theresa May respond, I thought about our whole ‘you don’t scare me, I’m going shopping’ approach to Islamic terrorism.  In fact, many people interviewed yesterday by... Read more

When populism is good and when it’s bad.  The gist, according to Samuel Gregg at The Federalist, is that populism is good when Pope Francis does it, bad when others do it.  Who those others are is anyone’s guess, but there are theories floating about. This is a bit like Pope Francis being the pope who asks who he is to judge.  Apparently he’s Pope Francis, and he does a splendid job judging things and people.  Sometimes he can out-judge a... Read more

Or were there?  The creation myth of atheism is kicked around by Artur Rosman.  I have some readers who swing to the less-than-religious side of the aisle.  What think you?   Read more

I  was outraged at the Westboro Baptists and their pitchfork brigade’s hateful protests.  I’m as outraged at this.  I will speak with those who are outraged at both.  I will try to reason with anyone who finds such protests beneficial.  I will not listen to someone who condemns one while pardoning the other.  They, to me, would be worse than the protesters, for they are the enablers who encourage such protests to happen in the first place. Fr. Bonnin is... Read more

There comes a time when every person realizes that Political Correctness is just a dodge for people pining for good old fashioned thought control.  Are we there yet?  No.  Not yet.  But then most things in history that turn out bad didn’t happen overnight.  Waiting until we’re there yet will merely guarantee a harder time dealing with it than stopping it before it happens. Here is an interesting piece tracing the rise of PC in the good old USA.  ... Read more

A great picture and info about St. Patrick’s bell.  What an artifact! Here is an excellent piece at National Catholic Register, and the usual fun goodies over at Fish Eaters about the day in the old country with interesting tidbits, and a good Soda Bread recipe to boot! Over at The American Catholic, Donald McClarey brings his usual interesting take on the holiday with some words penned by the Saint himself. And here is St. Patrick’s famous Breastplate for meditation while... Read more

It’s midterm time here at Griffey academy.  That means I’ll be busy for a few days grading exams and midterm reports and, of course, seeing how quickly my bracket collapses. Plus it’s St. Patrick’s day weekend!  St. Patrick is our youngest’s middle name and saint; and our third son picked him as his patron saint when we became Catholic.   Along with St. Francis, St. Patrick loomed large in my appreciation for historic Catholicism. Since part of my family comes from... Read more
