No, not that one.  This one. I get it.  Trump did so in Trumpspeak, using Twitter and acting like a child who was just told he couldn’t have dessert.  But the point is, as is typical now, I’m seeing reactions that suggest we are on the verge of a constitutional crisis because our president has dared go against the court. Again, I understand.  We were all shocked by Trump’s sudden revelation that the courts are there in order to provide... Read more

Donald McClarey has a birthday today.  I’ll leave it to his post to disclose the age.  A very happy day’s wishes. He also shares his birthday with former president Ronald Reagan.  As the son of two Reagan democrats, I never idolized Reagan.  I heard plenty of criticisms from my parents growing up.  But they also gave credit where it was due. Then again, the rest of their family remained staunch Democrats who refused to vote for him in either election.... Read more

Rod Dreher walks us through the developments over the last week. Thinking that Trump is some white knight out to protect religious rights is probably a fool’s hope. Nonetheless, we can only wait and see.       Read more

Eh.  Most in the sports media have declared Tom Brady the greatest quarterback of all time, and the Patriots the greatest team.  Even if they lose tonight.   If the Patriots win, then they’ll have a simple stat to back up the claim. The problem most people have is that the Patriots seem to embody the stereotypes of what people don’t like about America: Win at all costs, break the rules if you can, morals take a back seat to... Read more

Forgive me for not getting my underwear in a knot over everything Trump does, says, eats, thinks, wears and breathes.  I prefer to look at the serious problems. The travel ban?  From the beginning I felt it was poorly executed.  As for the legalities?  I don’t know.  I’m not a Constitutional lawyer.  But we have a series of checks and balances that can kick in if it crosses the line.  Which appears to be happening.  The same with other domestic... Read more

From Iraq, courtesy of Iraqi Archbishop Bashar Warda.  As I’ve said, the people at my wife’s Antiochian Orthodox church have taught me that neither side of our American debate reflects what those people from the Middle East appear to think. From my perspective in Iraq, I wonder why all of these protesters were not protesting in the streets when ISIS came to kill Christians and Yazidis and other minority groups. They were not protesting when the tens of thousands of... Read more

And I can’t help but think of this scene when I consider the current state of affairs in our country: Part of the reason is Trump’s insistence on forgoing careful planning in an attempt to make good his promises.  Part of it is Trump talking.  Part is the media’s 24/7 negative spin on all things Trump, even if they have to improvise with details and facts to paint that dim picture.  Part of it is the zealotry of radical anti-Trumpers who shout... Read more

If it was any other period in history, I’d know it was humor.  Today, I’m giving it a 78% chance of being a joke. Read more

Ever have one of those weeks when, for no reason, you just don’t have time?  One of those weeks where you expect to open the door in the morning and see yourself saying you made the doughnuts?  That’s this week. I knew it would be busy, but busier than Professor Hinkle?  Didn’t plan on that.  So posts are brief and will do my best to respond. In the meantime, here’s an awesome story.  A Texas community has come together to help after a... Read more

Liberals used to protest and demonstrate because someone wasn’t allowed to speak freely?  Yeah, so do I. Donald McClarey reflects on people violently shutting down free speech at a university because they say the speaker is a Nazi.  These are strange times.   Read more
