The ongoing debate.  Julia Duln over at Get Religion examines a series of articles in The Christian Science Monitor tackling a festering issue in our nation today.  This is one of those subjects you can tell the Media is not happy to cover.  The ongoing story, where an individual with religious convictions is at odds with liberal morality has been one that the mainstream,  has received muted coverage at best.  Somehow, even supporters of LGBT rights aren’t together on the idea that a person... Read more

In America our thoughts are on gun violence, police violence against blacks, wage gaps, gay wedding cakes and transgender bathroom use. Around the world, Christians have other things on their minds.   Not that the issues in our country aren’t important.  True, in some countries a police officer kills a person and gets promoted.  In ours, there is at least public outcry and perhaps prosecution.  And while the trauma of being denied a wedding cake can’t be underestimated, and the groundwork... Read more

The Washington Post has an interesting story about Fox News Service presenting a 1927 ‘Talkie’ of Benito Mussolini, Italy’s fascist dictator and inspiration for that other dictator named Hitler, speaking to the issue of Italian immigrants coming to the United States.  It’s a very good read, and has plenty of tidbits and interesting details about that period in history.  Oh, and if you think the piece is some neutral, unbiased story only wanting to present interesting details about that period in... Read more

That the great Kitchen Debate took place.  The American Catholic demonstrates the degree of art that is history.  Growing up and going through a state university in the 1980s, the Kitchen Debate was portrayed as a resounding coup for the Soviets.  There we were, thinking our little suburban houses and Mr. Coffees were all that and a bag of chips, and suddenly in swooped Khrushchev, mopping the floor with a bumbling, befuddled Nixon.  I remember seeing a clip of this in a college... Read more

If you missed the fact that almost ten times the number of people killed in Munich were killed in Kabul, you can be forgiven.  I hadn’t heard about it until I saw a post on Facebook.  Not that the people in Munich are unimportant.  They are very important.  And I think they speak to a larger problem infecting the world today that goes beyond guns in America, US Foreign policy, Islamic Terrorism, or even Right Wing Media.  It seems that as... Read more

Shall die by the Wikileaks.  Or will he?  So a Wikileak dump of 30000 emails suggests what most people already guessed, that the DNC was, along with the media, set firmly behind a Clinton nomination for president.  I’ve actually seen the press covering this, as in this story at ABC.  So far, however, the coverage is much ado about nothing.  On CNN this morning, an individual was interviewed and insisted the emails show no favoritism on the part of the DNC.... Read more

According to this Washington Post piece, that is how Kaine might be presented.  What impact that will have remains to be seen.  It will certainly be a topic of discussion across the Catholic blogosphere in the coming months.  We’ll see.  I don’t know enough about he man to comment.  I certainly don’t know enough about him to comment about others who have opinions about him. Read more

It looks like another attack has struck Europe.  So far the details are sketchy.  God bring peace to that area and protect the innocent.  Bring strength to those who will face loss and suffering in the days to come.  And send wisdom and truth into the hearts and minds of our leaders.  I am not content with the knowledge that the odds are against this happening to me.  I pray that we cease leaning on such a hellish comfort.  May... Read more

Because of the NBA’s moral stance on LGBT issues.  I’m fine with this.  Free country and all.  The NBA holds a certain set of values and it believes that the law reflected in HB2 violates these values.  Fine.  That’s what being in a free country is all about.  Not just being able to believe things.  But being able to act upon those same beliefs.  That’s why the First Amendment doesn’t say ‘Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of... Read more
