I posted a comment on Facebook earlier today shaming Fox News for their poor coverage of Caitlyn Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover, referring to her as Bruce (her former name) and avoiding using gender pronouns at all costs, opting instead of call her “Jenner” or “the reality show star.”
It now appears it is even worse as Fox Business hosts have mocked Caitlyn on live TV, first by introducing the segment with a photo of Caitlyn, host Neil Cavuto says, “What the hell is going on?!?” and is then followed up by reporter Dagen Mcdowell using male gender pronouns “he” and “him” multiple times when referring to Caitlyn.
Then in an attempt to end the segment, which obviously makes host Cavuto uncomfortable he attempts to joke, “Look at the time…” before quickly introducing the show’s next guest. But not without one last quip as the host then added bluntly, “Rome, final days. But that’s fine.”
While transgender issues like this become more and more mainstream and social stigmas are eliminated, media outlets must become aware of dealing with sensitive issues. And while many will make mistakes along the way, just as people will accidently refer to a trans person by the wrong pronoun or a longtime friend could call a trans person by their former name, it is not acceptable to laugh and joke about these issues so blatantly ignorantly.
What Fox Business and News have done, twice now in one day is reprehensible and pathetic even for them. They are mocking a person’s life because they are simply too ignorant of what is happening around them to bother to learn about the LGBTQ community and instead of better educating themselves and reporting on the facts, they are making jokes.
