Well, this is a new low, even for fundamentalist Christian and fellow Patheos blogger, Nancy French. French now thinks that San Bernardino could possibly have been avoided if it wasn’t for “clock boy,” better known as Ahmed Mohamed, who brought a clock to school inside a pencil box and was arrested when reactionary school staff and police officers thought it was a bomb.
French thinks our new PC culture led to suspicious activity not being reported because someone feared being seen as a bigot.
CBS reported that:
A man who has been working in the area said he noticed a half-dozen Middle Eastern men in the area in recent weeks, but decided not to report anything since he did not wish to racially profile those people.
“We sat around lunch thinking, ‘What were they doing around the neighborhood?’” he said. “We’d see them leave where they’re raiding the apartment.”
Yes, it would have been racial profiling and bigotry to report seeing Middle Eastern men in the area. Did this man have any reason to believe they had been up to no good? Unlikely. Was he just being a bigot and scared by the color of their skin? More likely.
If he had seen something he thought was actually dangerous and didn’t report it because of this fear, he would be nothing more than a coward who failed to act to protect others. But he didn’t — he saw Middle Eastern men and got scared.
French, of course, doesn’t see it this way.
When the California workers saw a group of Middle Eastern men acting suspiciously, they were worried — even so much to discuss it over lunch.
But, they learned the lesson of Clock Boy and kept their mouths closed.
Has the President? Has America? The clock is ticking.
We’ve got to stop prioritizing political correctness over safety.
The bold emphasis was added by French. The man never said the men were “acting suspiciously“–French added that to deliberately mislead her readers into thinking these men, who we don’t even know existed, were up to no good. That is beyond dishonest and adds to the history of bigotry against Muslims you will find on French’s blog.
So basically, French is saying that if you see brown men, call the cops, they are likely terrorists.
It seems to reason that this man, whoever he is, would likely find anyone of color suspicious, and it would not be odd to see Middle Eastern men or women coming and going from an apartment of a Middle Eastern family. I doubt anyone is suspicious of the amount of white people that come and go from my house.
No evidence to date has suggested anyone who visited the house of Syed Farook and wife Tashfeen Malik had anything to do with the attacks and to imply so based on fear and bigotry is irresponsible.
Don’t let dishonest and bigoted scare tactics like this change how we view others. We don’t need the Frenches of the world calling the cops every time someone sees a brown-skinned man walk into a building.
French is rallying a nation of fear and hatred, something we should not tolerate. This hatred should be called out every time we see it, and called what it is, hate speech.
If we stay silent, this bigotry will grow and every Muslim in this country will be at risk by reactionary extremists who judge people by the color of their skin or the country they “think” they might be from.
That is not the America I want to live in.
