In 1989, Iranian Ayatollah Khomeini pledged $3 million for the death of author Salman Rushdie after the publishing of his book The Satanic Verses.
Now a new fatwa has been issued, with a bounty of $600,000 for killing Rushdie, on top of the previous $3 million. The money is being raised by 40 state-run Iranian media outlets to the state-run Fars News Agency.
“Imam Khomeini’s fatwa is a religious decree and it will never lose its power or fade out,” Iran’s deputy culture minister Seyed Abbas Salehi.
Since the book’s publication, four people have been attacked for trying to translate the book, three of whom died.
Is this the religion of peace everyone is talking about?
