Bernie Sanders: ‘I am not an atheist’ in response to DNC email link

Bernie Sanders: ‘I am not an atheist’ in response to DNC email link July 24, 2016

Last week, Wikileaks released a flurry of emails from the DNC that showed in many ways the Democratic Party conspired to make sure Hillary Clinton would win the Democratic nomination for president. Including one plan, that was not set into motion, to out Bernie Sanders as an atheist, believing such news would ruin his chances in two key primary states.

The leak was damning enough that DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz has been removed from the convention this week.

Sanders has since called for Wasserman Schultz to resign her position following the email leak and has now spoken out about the potential outing as an atheist. While visiting CNN, Jake Tapper asked Sanders directly about the email leak. Sanders reply was straight forward.

First of all, I am not an atheist. But aside from all of that, I mean, it is an outrage and sad that you would have people in important positions in the DNC trying to undermine my campaign. It goes without saying the function of the DNC is to represent all of the candidates, to be fair and even-minded.

The only person that knows if Sanders is an atheist is Bernie Sanders himself. Everyone else can only speculate.

Establishment Democrats and Clinton supporters are trying to make it sound like the potential outing was not a big deal, as though a candidate’s religious beliefs don’t matter. They shouldn’t, of course, but the fact DNC officials thought the outing was a good idea, and that atheism could be used as a tool against him, shows how little respect they have for their atheist voters.

I sincerely hope Sanders isn’t lying about this beliefs for political gain, and as I said, we can only speculate and take him at his word. Regardless, those officials who discussed the outing should be fired immediately and the whole DNC should undergo some serious staff changes.
