Is there such a thing as unholy work? In Jesus’ time, money changing was considered unholy work. But today, “commerce” makes the world go round. What has really changed over time except the name?
And consider Zaccheus, who was universally scorned because he collected taxes for the Romans. Do we similiarly ostracize our brothers and sisters who are IRS employed? And what about those who work in fashion, advertising, government, insurance, hedge funds, used cars and a host of other professions that aren’t always held in high esteem?
Are there other lines of work that we should avoid? Certainly we can start with anything that is obviously illegal and immoral — prostitution, drug dealing, grand theft auto -– these are easy calls.
But are there “legitimate” businesses that we shouldn’t consider working at, such as casinos, bars or liquor stores? Can a Christian be a bartender, blackjack dealer or sell cigars?
Does the “redemption of the workplace” only mean redemption of “good” workplaces?
Tell us about your “dirtiest job” and if snuffed your light, or only made it brighter?
What are you thoughts on employment boundaries?
Please, share with a friend if you feel moved.
