I was introduced to the band U2 more than 25 years ago and they’ve been my favorite band ever since. Although I don’t listen to them as vigilantly as I did in my younger years, I still love cranking them up to ‘11’ and singing off key as I motor through traffic.
A few weeks back I saw an outtake from an interview with Bono and Bill Hybels of Willow Creek. He was talking about how his faith has influenced his work and his career.
Bono was telling the story of how a friend had chided him for asking God to “bless his work.” His friend suggested that Bono should instead spend his time seeking God – and go to where He is. According to Bono’s friend, that’s where the blessings would be found!
When I heard Bono say that, I felt a quick stab – it was like he was talking about me. I’ve voiced many prayers, asking God to bless me and the work I was doing. It made me think that I shouldn’t concern myself with whether God likes my work. I should be more concerned about doing God’s work — that’s where the blessing lies.
