I once lost a watch. It was a gift from my uncle who had passed away. I searched pockets, bags, boxes, car seats and turned everything inside- out- upside down. Nowhere. I was devasted, as if this this piece of jewelry had slain my spirit. Eventually it turned up. It was in a pair of pants in the trunk of my car. It’s interesting how we look at the things we lose in life. Rather than the object being the... Read more

As homosexual marriage sweeps our land, we are told that these are loving couples who deserve compassion and fairness. And it doesn’t stop there, as social programs are undergirded with the “love first” slogan. Even in the church, we are taught to love the sinner. And that is true, as that is God’s action and it is my First Duty to emulate that. But loving the sinner doesn’t mean that I have to love the sin – and we still must preach the bad news that we are fallen, that we are distant from God, that we are desperately in need of a Savior. Read more

Have you ever shared a backyard with multiple neighbors? I once lived in a house where there were three neighbors who all shared portions of our back fence.  One neighbor added two-foot slats to the top of the fence to ensure that it was now 8 feet high with no possible way of ever seeing his yard. He also called when the kids were boisterous or the dog barked or the music was too loud On another side the fence posts broke off... Read more

During Creation, I imagine God smiling while he worked. With great joy, he painted the stripes on the zebra's back. With a chuckle, he fashioned the hyena's giggle. Read more

"How do I look? Do these pants fit right? Is this shirt tight across the back?" There are few men who would ever want to answer questions like these. Along with your mother's cooking, old girlfriends, and commenting on the number of shoes in a closet, no man should ever comment on a woman’s weight. Even when pressed to be honest, we know it’s just a no win situation and you need to back away slowly. I mean swiftly. Read more

The blinking cursor greets me.  “How can I find peace?”  I type slowly, feeling a little silly. Here I am “Googling,” a nonsensical word that would have inspired laughs and guffaws 10 years ago. Today, it’s a part of our eeryday lexicon, a verb and a noun all in one. I ask the ghost in the machine the question.  It takes Google all of .39 seconds to find more than 860 million results.  That won’t do me much good. “Narrow your... Read more

Show a little respect You don’t have to be buddies with the boss. You don’t have to be chummy. You don’t even have to “like” him. But we are all called to be respectful. The spirit of disrespect comes out in a thousand little ways, each one cutting its way into office harmony. You say the boss hasn’t earned your respect? We are really without excuse. We are called to something much greater. “Be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and the gentle but also to the unjust.” 1 Peter 2.18. Read more

Too many live life full of regrets. The relationship that they lost. The vocation they never found. The job they were fired from. The place they have never lived. And this is how they see themselves. Formless. Void. Bottomless emptiness. Read more

What I lost in childhood experiences, I gained in lifetime lessons. It is more blessed to give than to receive. We might not have money, but we have a blessing and we need to be generous. Read more
