Michele Bachmann continues to drive the crazy train down the tracks at a breakneck pace. On Sunday, she went on national television and said that Iraq should pay the United States for invading their country — and should pay the families of every American soldier killed during the war.
It’s over 800 billion dollars that we have expended [in Iraq]. I believe that Iraq should pay us back for the money that we spent, and I believe that Iraq should pay the families that lost a loved one several million dollars per life, I think at minimum.
And what of the tens of thousands of Iraqis killed in the war? Should they pay those families too? Or should we, since we were the ones who invaded them? In Bachmann’s warped mind, of course, it’s all their fault for making us invade them and bomb their cities. Behold, the real meaning of “American exceptionalism” — we get to invade your countries and then make you pay us for the privilege of being invaded. And remember, Bachmann is a paragon of moral virtue because she has God on her side.
Never mind also that this idea would undermine the fragile government we set up in a serious way by helping bankrupt them, thus making the country even more unstable than it already is and fueling more unrest and violence. But that’s okay because that will just be an excuse to invade again and charge them for it. This is starting to sound a lot like a mafia operation, isn’t it?
