Bigots Running Out of Money

Bigots Running Out of Money December 18, 2011

My former AINN colleague Sofia Resnick reports at the American Independent that the National Organization for Marriage is running out of cash and desperately asking its followers to bail them out after spending far more money than they took in last year.

One day after The American Independent released an analysis of the National Organization for Marriage’s recently reported finances from 2010, which reveal that last year the organization spent more than $1 million than it earned, NOM President Brian Brown emailed supporters asking for help covering what he terms a “looming shortfall.”

And they’re looking for advice on how to spend their money more efficiently:

  • Should I abandon a state like Maryland, New Jersey or Rhode Island, where marriage is under fire?
  • Should I scale back our efforts to repeal same-sex marriage in a state like Iowa, New Hampshire or New York?
  • Should I stop our Washington-based lobbying efforts to protect the Defense of Marriage Act (there is new legislation to repeal DOMA) and just hope for the best?
  • Should I scale back our plans for the presidential election, letting President Obama off the hook for the lies he will tell on the campaign trail?

Nope. You should just close your doors. You’re on the losing side of history, just like your predecessors were in opposing interracial marriage 45 years ago. Give up.

    Hark! What’s that I hear?

Could it be the world’s tiniest violin playing just for NOM?

NOM is going broke. God it’s great to wake up on a Sunday morning and get good news right off the bat.

  • Brother Ogvorbis, OM . . . Really?

    * Should I abandon a state like Maryland, New Jersey or Rhode Island, where marriage is under fire?

    * Should I scale back our efforts to repeal same-sex marriage in a state like Iowa, New Hampshire or New York?

    * Should I stop our Washington-based lobbying efforts to protect the Defense of Marriage Act (there is new legislation to repeal DOMA) and just hope for the best?

    * Should I scale back our plans for the presidential election, letting President Obama off the hook for the lies he will tell on the campaign trail?

Yes to all. Yes, yes, and yes. And, while you’re at it, Ed’s suggestion to close your doors works, too. Though if NOMnomnom is willing to keep absorbing reactionary money without actually spending it on anything, this would be a net good.

  • Didaktylos

I suggest that whoever has charge of the cashbox heads for Costa Rica now – go on, it’s what you were always intending to do anyway.

    There much better.

    Another failed hater. Too bad.

  • D. C. Sessions

Oh, I don’t know. There’s a lot to be said for spending every penny on imitating (or supporting) Liberty Counsel in losing some more lawsuits, scattering precedent all over the map.

The FRC also claim to need $4million to end the year on budget, though they aren’t asking their supporters where best to focus their hatred.

  • Larry

Come on, people. Ignorance and hatred isn’t gonna pay for itself. Pony up. It’s what jebus whats you to do.

  • dingojack

Let Jebus pay, cash only thanks.

  • Brother Ogvorbis, OM . . . Really?

    You miserable piece of shit.

I realize that I am not a regular here, but I do not understand why am I a miserable piece of shit for writing that? (Not that I am not a miserable piece of shit, I’m just wondering what I did wrong which garnered that reaction.)

  • davidforrest

Maybe he should ask Greg Davis for suggestions? If NOM helped conservative anti-gay politicians with expenses, then they could keep certain things off the state books and thereby preserve their brand of ethics.

  • dingojack

I think NOM spokesperson is the aforementioned ‘miserable piece of shit’*

Total grokfail on my part. Sorry.

  • marcus

@16 Sorry Brother Ogvordis for being unclear. You are always one of my favorite posters and you have my deepest respect.

  • marcus

I’m just full of fail today. I meant “Brother Ogvorbis”.

  • dingojack

I haven’t seen this much fail since – well, since my last post!

    🙂 Dingo

Where I am, fail is normal.

This is the same group that has run ads saying that government should get out of the way of helping the poor, because charities could do it better, and spent a lot of time screaming about how deficit spending hurts the poor the most.

    Oh, the fucking irony.

  • marcus

What I should have written in the first place:

I have a suggestion for you Brian Brown. Why don’t you fuck off and die you miserable piece of shit? Yours Truly, Mark

  • F

    Fantastic!

And they’re looking for advice on how to spend their money more efficiently:

No they aren’t. That is thinly-veiled fear-mongering and guilt-tripping meant to squeeze more money from people. I wish the scarycon “base” would finally wake up, or at least throw in the towel in disgust and resentment against their “leaders”. It would be much better for them, even if they can’t figure that out on their own.

  • dingojack

Brother Ogvorbis (#20) – ‘O Brother, where art thou?’

  • dan4

@22: “Why don’t you fuck off and die…”

    Stay classy, Marcus.

  • scifi1

    Just an (obvious) question.

How did they manage to spend more than they took in?

    Overdrafts? Loans?

    What?

Since the nutters who caused the GFC have necessitated families everywhere tightening the old fiscal belt, you’d have thought the great ‘supporter’ of “Teh (not gay) Fammly” would know a bit about families in hardship and budgeting, hmmm?

Here’s a thought, Brownie. Dump all of that anti-human shit you’ve been spruiking into a big pile, set fire to it and use it to fuel the steam powered, Victorian horse you rode in on and FUCK OFF!

  • @22: “Why don’t you fuck off and die…”

    Stay classy, Marcus.

Never fails. Some PAC leader does something perfectly awful, like spread misery and injustice by raising millions of dollars to prop up old prejudices. Then somebody correctly identifies them as a miserable old piece of shit and correctly suggests that they fuck off and die. Then someone has a problem with the remark and thinks it isn’t “classy”.

  • marcus

Joking aside, there is something about the self-righteous, smug, arrogance of such an unmitigated asshole, as Brian Brown surely is, who has the fucking temerity to casually dispense with the dignity and rights of real human beings all for some imagined posterity that he believes he will garner to himself as some kind of moral, holy being because of his obeisance to some poorly imagined, completely contradicting, and truly incomprehensible, myth, that really just pisses me off.

  • dan4

@28: Yeah, Marcus, judging from what you wrote @22, you’re a big one to lecture about “dignity.”

  • NOM is about depriving women, and the president is a man. Figures.

  • marcus

dan4 @ 29 Let me quote a someone from another thread who was a much classier guy than me, Chris Hitchens, for your benefit, “…kiss my ass.”

  • dan4

    @31: “…who was a much classier guy than me,….”

Man, is that setting a low, LOW bar, lol.

Anyway, you’d probably whine like a stuck pig if some anti-gay-marriage person “suggested” that a pro-gay marriage person should “fuck off and die.”

  • dan4: Anyway, you’d probably whine like a stuck pig if some anti-gay-marriage person “suggested” that a pro-gay marriage person should “fuck off and die.”

You’re having trouble seeing past that, aren’t you dan4? I guess injustice matters less than making sure everyone is “civil”. Especially minorities – and those who sympathize with them – must be civil to the ones in power, no? Heaven forefend any harsh words should be said when someone’s civil rights are abrogated.

Go lay down on your fainting couch and clutch your pearls.

georgewiman – ‘oooohhhhh! That’s soooooo sexist, and ageist, and anti-pearlist, and anti-low-blood-pressureist, and, and …. ooooh’

@33:”…when someone’s civil rights are abrogaged.”

Marriage (homosexual or heterosexual) isn’t a “civil right.”

  • dingojack

    [Comes around from deep swoon]

No doubt Dan will be back to tell us how we aren’t permitted an opinion ’cause we’re all so privileged*.

Allow me to decode this concept for all the rest of the ‘elitists’ out there:

    I don’t like your argument, but I don’t have a counter-argument, so you’re all poopy-heads ’cause I said so. So shut-up and meekly accept The One-true Wisdom of Me™‘.

@32 “Anyway, you’d probably whine like a stuck pig if some anti-gay-marriage person “suggested” that a pro-gay marriage person should ‘fuck off and die.'”

Actually I think that I would be rather amused that one of the lying bastards actually expressed their true feelings rather than hide behind arrogant self-righteousness and false concern. But you would know more about that than me.

  • Michael Heath

    dan4 writes:

Marriage (homosexual or heterosexual) isn’t a “civil right.”

Do you accede marriage is a fundamental right?

  • dingojack

    oops, too long editing…

Marriage is a contract entered into by two people (at the moment, mostly of opposite sexes) guaranteed by the state.

If it isn’t a ‘civil right’ what is it?*

    Dingo

    —–

    * a pagan rite?

  • marcus

@35 Wrong again dumbass. The Supreme Court ruled in 1967 in “Loving vs Virginia” and (I quote part of the original finding) that:

“Marriage is one of the “basic civil rights of man,” fundamental to our very existence and survival…. To deny this fundamental freedom on so unsupportable a basis as the racial classifications embodied in these statutes, classifications so directly subversive of the principle of equality at the heart of the Fourteenth Amendment, is surely to deprive all the State’s citizens of liberty without due process of law. The Fourteenth Amendment requires that the freedom of choice to marry not be restricted by invidious racial discrimination. Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the State.”

One day we will be able to substitute the words “sexual or gender” classifications for “racial” and we will be one step closer to justice.

I think you missed the real story here:

Human Rights Campaign’s analysis of NOM’s 2010 Form 990, filed with the Internal Revenue Service last month and obtained by the American Independent, confirmed that the top five donors to NOM accounted for almost 90 percent of its funding.

HRC’s breakdown of NOM’s 2010 total revenue from contributions of $9,197,742 is as follows:

    Top 2 donors: $6,356,000 (69.1%)

    Top 5 donors: $8,106,000 (88.1%)

    Top 10 donors: $8,326,000 (90.5%)

    Top 22 donors: $8,427,500 (91.6%)

By contrast, most grassroots organizations are funded primarily by small donors. HRC’s revenue per donor has ranged from $33 – $37 over the last few years.
