Santorum Statement or Death Metal Lyrics?

Santorum Statement or Death Metal Lyrics? March 3, 2012

Mother Jones has taken the opportunity of Dave Mustaine’s non-endorsement support of Rick Santorum to put together a quiz. Can you tell which sentences are quotes from Santorum and which are lyrics from heavy metal songs? I got 7 out of 10 right.

Wow, I feel like an idiot. 4 out of 10 right.

  • Ellie

7 out of 10. Not bad for someone who had to look up Megadeth on Wiki.

  • davidct

I got only 4/10 too. I feel ignorant enough to run for the presidency. Just a little shot of money.

  • I’m a metalhead and I only got 4/10.

  • Chuck C

3/10. I’ve never been less dismayed at failing a test. Or surprised.

  • Larry

I hate metal and I got 4/10. I’m also appalled at what a complete asshole Frothy is.

  • aeryk

I love metal, although not a fan of Megadeth. I got 4/10!

  • Michael Heath

5/10, where I don’t give enough of a shit for either Santorum or Mustaine to figure out which questions I got wrong. I did try on the quiz though.

  • vmanis1

4/10, but I have to admit that I’ve never actually listened to a heavy metal record (though I did once listen to a learned person on CBC Radio explaining that heavy metal is musically much more interesting than most people realize).

  • pacal

About Santorum well what do you expect from the frothy mix? As for Mustaine? I will forgive him much because he appeared on Duck Dodgers.

  • Trebuchet

6/10, rather to my surprise. First four in a row right, missed two, hit two, missed the last two.

People seem to be surprised that a rocker would go conservative. Thing is, if they’ve been successful, they’ve got lots of money. That tends to make them opposed to movements like OWS that threaten them.

  • KG

Another 4/10. Right-wing religious ranting is nonsensical, whether it proceeds from Megadeth or from Stinkyfroth.

  • KG

According to Real Clear Politics, Robomormon is back in the lead in national polls of Republicans; looks like surging Santorum may turn out to be just another “at-least-he’s-not-Romney” flash in the pan, sputtering feebly away to nothing.

  • ‘Tis Himself, OM

6 of 10. Is that passing?

  • Blueaussi

Well, I thought I sucked at telling frothy bottom from fluffy hair; but, after reading the comments, I see I’m in good company. I’m sitting pretty at 4/10.

  • istilldream

This is hilarious. 8/10. Still, I guessed on a couple. Mustaine has always been a pathetic, untalented, incoherent ass. He and Santorum deserve eachother.

(Also, not to be a pedant, but Megadeth are Thrash Metal [and barely Thrash at that.] Death Metal would be something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1FivvPQIUY )

EEK! I got 7/10! I don’t regularly listen to metal, and I wasn’t sure who Dave Mustaine is until I started the test. This must mean that I’m paying far too much attention to the GOP clown show than I should. But it’s so funny and fascinating, waiting for the whole party to implode.

It must also mean that I should switch to a mellower radio station.

BTY, I was very disappointed to discover that googling “Santorum” no longer has the neologism as the #1 result; c’mon, people, never mind the primaries, let’s put Rick back to #1 where he belongs.

  • daved

I went 6/10. That was a lot tougher than I thought. There were a couple that I was sure had to be Mustaine that turned out to be Santorum.

  • Rip Steakface

Damn, I got beat to the pedantic genre classification that Ed messed up. Megadeth is pretty far from death metal – the riffs are thrashy, the vocals aren’t growls, and the topic isn’t blood and guts (for the most part). Megadeth in their heyday were about corporate control – an extreme left wing band. Then Mustaine stopped doing heroin and found Jesus, and they went down the shitter.

I’m a massive metal head, but I hardly pay attention to lyrics and I only have Megadeth’s two best albums, “Rust in Peace” and “Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?”

  • Aquaria

Not a metal head, but in the 4/10 brigade.

  • anandine

5 of 10. Of course, I don’t listen to that kind of music, and I notice what Santorum is frothing only when he is quoted on lefty blogs.

  • Michael Heath

    anandine:

I’m pretty sure the virgin Mary blessed him with perpetual frothing.

    boadinum:

    Now that’s disturbing.

  • sinned34

8/10 for me, but I cheated on one question because, in a strange coincidence, Winamp had randomly selected to play Megadeth while I was doing the quiz.

  • davidjordan

9/10, only missed the dang hobbits question. Oh well.

  • Crip Dyke, Right Reverend Feminist FuckToy of Death & Her Handmaiden

    7 / 10 –

Got 1, missed 2 & 3, then 6 in a row before boffing the last one…and the worst part is that i originally answered mustaine on #10 before, at the very last second, switching over. C- for me. Largely because I know ignorant Santorum quotes so well – generally if I didn’t recognize the quote, I assumed it was mustaine, but I went against formula on that last one. Sigh.

    “Ignorant Santorum for 1000 Alex?”

  • F

    Buhahahah! Fantastic!

I only got 6/10. The Hobbits got me.

  • Midnight Rambler

Damn, Rick Santorum with long curly hair looks an awful lot like Weird Al.

  • juice

If you’re going to link to death metal examples, at least link to something good like The Faceless or Necrophagist, or at least an old standard like Deicide.

    Link

  • Pieter B, FCD

6/10. I’m not sure whether that’s something to be proud of or not, but it seems I’m in good company.

  • Freeman

8/10. Missed 3 & 9. Some of them were easy, some pretty hard. Looking at some of the choices I could easily imagine it going either way.

  • Aquaria

I notice what Santorum is frothing only when he is quoted on lefty blogs.

I hope you don’t get too depressed when I say that maybe you don’t hear about it anywhere else because the “moderates” and conservatards agree with him so much that they don’t find it necessary to comment on what he’s saying.

    Just sayin’.

  • 7/10. Mostly lucky guesses though, except for the regicide comment, I remembered that from watching TRMS..

  • Considering that I think, as fucked in the skull as he is, Mustaine WOULD be a better president than Sansscrotum, I am hardly surprised that I only got 4/10. It’s all fucking KKKrazeepants nonsense and could have come out of any of those reichwing assholes out there.

  • michaellatiolais

8/10. I thought my knowledge of classic Megadeth(anything prior to Youthanasia) would suffice, but really, it only helped with the “Holy Wars…” question.

Dave’s fall from heroin to religion is pretty sad. I’ve always thought he was flaky, especially whining on about Metallica during the late 80s, but at least he put out some catchy metal material on his own. Once he hit Youthanasia, it was all downhill. There was the whole “I hurt my widdle wrist, now I can’t play guitar anymore” crap that I now think was just a cover while he tried to figure out how to segue into a Christian rock career.

I bought United Abominations on a whim when it was on a sale rack a while back. Worst piece of shit album I’ve had the misfortune to load on my mp3 player, and this is coming from someone who still has Winger on his playlist.

  • stace

and this is coming from someone who still has Winger on his playlist

A couple of those Winger albums are actually not too bad, certainly not as craptastic as most of the other hair bands of that time.

I’ve been meaning to give a listen to some of their later work, which I’ve heard was better than the first album. I was referring specifically to the song “Seventeen,” which I liked as a young teenager, but which has now morphed into an increasingly creepy song. I like the song “Who’s the One,” still. It’s on my playlist.
