Barber’s Absurd Criticism of Savage

Barber’s Absurd Criticism of Savage May 4, 2012

Matt Barber delivers a predictably hypocritical and idiotic column throwing a temper tantrum about Dan Savage pointing out the inconsistency and stupidity of Christian beliefs about homosexuality. He begins with this whopper:

They used to arrest middle-aged perverts who get their jollies from talking dirty to children. Today, they get a television show, a nationally syndicated column, a lecture circuit and multiple visits to the Obama White House.

Talking dirty to children? He did nothing of the sort. He used a “naughty” word — ZOMG! — but it was an accurate one and entirely justified by the issue he was discussing.

No, Savage has finally managed to publicly discredit himself as the anti-Christian bigot and bully he’s always been. Never again will this guy be taken seriously as an anti-bullying crusader.

Only by cretins like you who are in favor of bullying. Think about how deranged Barber’s view of bullying is. We live in a country where kids who are thought to be gay, accurately or not, are routinely tormented so badly that they are pushed to kill themselves, where Christian ministers openly talk about beating the gay out of them, where parents send their kids off to military-style reform schools and camps to be abused in the name of God at the first sign of even possibly being gay, where hundreds of people on Twitter will post messages threatening to kill their future child if he or she should turn out to be gay — and the only bullying he manages to see is when someone dares to criticize his religion. A man who is still complaining that the Supreme Court won’t let him throw gay people in jail suddenly decides that it’s “bullying” when someone stands up and calls him a bigot and tells him that his beliefs are bullshit.

He then walked through a list of the same tired left-wing talking points about the Bible – long ago discredited – covering shellfish, virginity, etc. “The Bible is a radically pro-slavery document,” he said (anti-Christian trash we’ve come to expect from the secular left).

How exactly have those things been “discredited”? The Bible does, in fact, say all of those things, much of it in the very same books that condemn homosexuality. The Bible does, in fact, endorse slavery, explicitly and repeatedly. There is not one verse in the Bible condemning slavery and dozens that support it, in both the old and new testaments.

Yep, this deviant troglodyte is the face of the left’s anti-bullying efforts. I’ve often said that those wonderfully “tolerant” liberals – the self-styled opponents of “hate” and “bigotry” – are the most intolerant, hateful bigots among us.

It is neither bigoted not hateful to point out that wingnuts like Barber are hateful and bigoted. Welcome to the world of Christian blackwhite. Believing that God commanded people to stone gay people to death, or women who weren’t virgins on their wedding day — that’s the obscenity. Calling that bullshit is the nicest thing a rational person could say about it.

this shit drives me crazy. nothing about what Savage said was bigotry. if he had said “those whacko Christians are all morons”, now that would be bigoted. pointing out that Christians already ignore parts of the Bible so why not just ignore one more is called common sense, and it really shouldn’t be that hard to figure out. no one’s faith is being trashed, and no individuals are being attacked.

Well, someone once said “Nah uh” in reply to all that. If that doesn’t mean “discredited” I don’t know what does.

  • ” deviant ” is to be read as faggot.

    Matt Dillahunty said it best:

“If I see you beating someone with a stick, and I take your stick away, I’m not oppressing *you*.”

Some of those comments on the WND…just wow. Sometimes I’m ashamed of my species.

  • slc1

Gee, he forgot all about the admonition against eating pork products.

  • trog69

Matthewgreenberg, don’t waste your time being outraged by Fischer; it’s the fact that most of the GOP presidential candidates sat down with him for interviews that should get your blood boiling.

Imagine if President Obama had sat down with Louis Farrakhan.

what they heard: “blah blah blah blah Bible bullshit blah blah blah…”

    Matt Barber:

Savage has finally managed to publicly discredit himself as the anti-Christian bigot and bully he’s always been. Never again will this guy be taken seriously as an anti-bullying crusader.

I read that as Mr. Barber seeking a way to justify his determined future avoidance of Dan Savage while promoting we all ostracize Mr. Savage because he reveals inconvenient truths regarding the Bible. Facts that expose the hypocrisy and dishonesty of inerrantist Christians. I think it’s safe to conclude Mr. Barber wants the threat of cognitive dissonance to stop without having to adapt his beliefs to reality.

  • evodevo

My fundie co-workers fail to see the illogic when I point out to them that they are cherry-picking the OT and ignoring that Jesus said NOTHING concerning homosexuals. They especially freak out when I point out that lesbians AREN’T MENTIONED AT ALL ANYWHERE. Cognitive dissonance is such a hoot.

You will never convince someone like Barber that he is wrong. For him to admit the rationality of even one argument point would be to admit his whole fundie world is built on sand. Never happen.

That said, there are a lot of people on the fence who WILL hear the argument and may consider a more rational stance.

    Ya never know who’s listening.

  • Hercules Grytpype-Thynne

“Tired left-wing talking points … – long ago discredited” is merely Barber’s long-winded way of saying “facts”.

  • The Bible does, in fact, endorse slavery, explicitly and repeatedly. There is not one verse in the Bible condemning slavery and dozens that support it, in both the old and new testaments.

It’s right there in Paul’s Letter to Philemon:

“And you should forget all this shit once it becomes politically unviable.”

trog69 “Imagine if President Obama had sat down with Louis Farrakhan.”

    Do they fist-bump?

Savage did apologize for calling the walker-outers `pansy-ass’, the one intemperate wording he used during the video clip.

I will believe that Christians really do consider the Bible inerrant and completely the Word of God when I see them follow the Commandment and `Remember the Sabbath, to keep it holy’.

  • dan4

@14:”…the one intemperate wording he used during the video clip.”

Wrong. Savage also used the word “bullshit” during his little tirade.

  • Forbidden Snowflake

“Bullshit” is not intemperate when describing the Bible, IMO. “Pansy-ass” was intemperate because it was directed at people, not ideas or a book.

  • jws1

The most pansy-assed part of this whole story are the pansy-asses who think that calling a bunch of folks “pansy-asses,” folks who publicly display themselves as pansy-asses, is somehow wrong. If it looks like a duck….then it’s a pansy-ass.

  • A. Noyd

Actually, Dan says “pansy-ass” was aimed at the act of walking out, not those doing the walking, but allowed that it amounted to the same thing in the end.

  • naturalcynic

I’m so sorry that the term “bullshit” was used. It’s certainly not accurate enough. The term should be psychopathic.
