Joe Walsh Channels Todd Akin

Joe Walsh Channels Todd Akin October 23, 2012

Rep. Joe Walsh and Tammy Duckworth had a debate the other day in their campaign for Walsh’s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, giving Walsh the opportunity to declare that he thought abortion should be illegal in all cases — including rape, incest and even the life of the mother:

Walsh said he was against abortion “without exception,” including rape, incest and in cases in which the life or health of the mother was in jeopardy.

Asked by reporters after the debate if he was saying that it’s never medically necessary to conduct an abortion to save the life of a mother, Walsh responded, “Absolutely.”

“With modern technology and science, you can’t find one instance,” he said. “… There is no such exception as life of the mother, and as far as health of the mother, same thing.”

This puts him on the extreme edge of the extreme edge of the anti-abortion woman movement. But one would think that Walsh, who famously didn’t pay his child support to the tune of more than $100,000, would be in favor of abortion so he doesn’t get stuck paying for those kids.

Yeah, Joe Walsh is as slimy as they come.

He owed over $100,000 in child support not too long ago and his ex had to take him to court to get it.

Walsh the family values Taliban wannabe, has been married twice, divorced twice, and has 5 kids. Which he apparently doesn’t care enough about to support.

One wonders what they did for food. They might well have been part of those 47% moochers and parasites the Tea Party hates. You know old people on social security and kids on food stamps.

    Walsh is likely a sociopath.

Looks like Walsh’s over-confidence in a “modern science and technology” which has now succeeded in magically solving every single medical problem women can have is a great working example of what these folks like to call “scientism.” They’re worshiping science by extending it into wishful thinking. After all, God wouldn’t allow moral decisions to be hard, would he? They have to be able to neatly separate the holy from the wicked. No gray areas, no tough choices, ever.

He rejects our reality and substitutes his own.

    Walsh is factually wildly wrong.

  • Sastra: I believe the proper name for it is “Christian Scientism.”

  • Michael Heath

As long as conservative Christians use premises based on their religion to take a demonstrably evil* position, even false premises, our culture doesn’t consider them or their positions evil. They get a pass from the culture at large they don’t merit; even when promoting evil.

*In this context, positions that if carried out as policy would clearly and purposefully assure a net increase in human suffering.

I think what Walsh really means is, that it really isn’t necessary to save the life of a woman.

  • Every time you post comments by this dickhead, my heart skips a beat thinking its about the musician.

Not hardly. We rank 50th worldwide last I checked.

  • So in Joe Walsh’s world, what happens to the woman in the case of ectopic pregnancy?

  • baal

Also note that the maternal death rate is uneven – it’s 2-3x as high in blacks vs whites (link is 5 minute google-fu census data)

FWIW, it strains my reality meter that Joe Walsh has a decent chance of winning. Duckworth is poling ahead but her lead is shrinking.

Ectopic pregnancy? Is that some sort of socialist muslim atheist scam like evolution and global warming? It never actually happens, its just an excuse used to justify abortions.

Alternate response 1: if those liberal doctors would just let her carry it to term, the baby would come out perfectly fine. With rainbows, unicorns, and puppies, even.

Alternate response 2: I meant that abortion is never medically necessary to save the life of a good woman. Those slutty slut sluts are a different story. Of course they could’ve done some dirty sin that resulted in dangerous complications. Don’t sin, you dirty sinner, and it won’t happen to you. [/channeling Joe Walsh]

In addition to eric’s possibilities, don’t discount the Anecdote Defense. It’s one of the most popular responses to otherwise devastating questions.

What about ectopic pregnancy? “Well, mark, let me tell you. I knew a woman who was a few months pregnant and had a pain in her tummy, was bleedin’ a little bit. Went to the doctor and doctor told her it was an “ectopic pregnancy.” Very dangerous, internal haemorrhage, life threatening, and so on. Needs an abortion. Yep, gotta have that abortion to “save your life.” Well, let me tell you this woman would have none of that. Good, pious woman knew God wouldn’t give her a soul only so she could choose to take it. Picked her self up, left that office and … guess what? Started feeling better, pain went away. 7 months later she gave birth to a happy, healthy baby boy. So you see? You just can’t know, mark, you just can’t know.”

The personal anecdote means you have to deny someone’s experience. Add in any reference to God or spirituality, and it’s double-wrong to question it further with nothing more than “statistics.” Have you no hope?

Plus, modern medicine can put that ectopic baby back in bed where it belongs. Not good to coddle it.

  • Didn’t I just see a death in childbirth on the news?

    Yes: Woman dies in childbirth.

  • Ellie

Doesn’t count. She didn’t die until after the delivery.

  • This headline confused and disturbed me for a moment, because I thought it was about the musician. I was relieved when I started reading the main text.

  • I don’t care what your political leanings are. I can’t imagine how anyone cannot see that Joe Walsh is a truly awful human being.

markmcglone So in Joe Walsh’s world, what happens to the woman in the case of ectopic pregnancy?

I’m sure that all the Republican politicians are up to date on basic pregnancy medical issues, and any laws they write on the subject will cover this and other medical questions with safe and informed exceptions.

After which they will charge George W. Bush with war crimes.
