Wingnuts: America Becoming Nazi Germany

Wingnuts: America Becoming Nazi Germany November 5, 2012

Here’s a very amusing video from Truth in Action Ministries that features a Who’s Who of American batshittery, all declaring that because we’ve kicked God out of our politics, America is now becoming just like Nazi Germany. Pop some popcorn and enjoy.

This clip was a chilling follow up to Aronra’s speech in Florida. Hope everyone visits the ballot box tomorrow.

What do we get when the Christians are in power? Oh that’s right, things like Dark Ages, Crusades, and Inquisitions.

  • eric

I suspect that according to this group, we’ve been becoming more like Nazi Germany every election since the 1940s.

  • This is a very distorted view of German history. Hitler never changed the date of Christmas, for example. Notice the lack of attention to the fact that Hitler remained a Christian (Roman Catholic) until the day he died. His regime faced only minor religiously motivated opposition in Germany, while it capitalized on the long Christian tradition of anti-Semitism.

  • F

Yep, everywhere the right has influence, it is becoming more like Nazi Germany.

  • unbound

Silly Wingnuts, we aren’t becoming Nazi Germany, the greed of the richest are making us the next Mexico. Of course, the religious wingnuts will be happy with that since it usually has the result of the masses running back to religion which claims to have the answers…

  • dingojack

According to a least one market, they’d better get used to living a country where America is exactly like Nazi Germany.

    Yes is the ultimate report*:

    Intrade today

Winner of the 2012 Presidential election

(Figures in parentheses are movement since last week in percent)

    by party

Democratic: 65.643% (up by 3.7667) [Lead by 31.382]

    Republican: 34.261% (down by 3.6631)

    other: 0.096% (down by 0.1036).

Obama: 66.999% (up by 5.099) [Lead by 33.998]

My guess is about 52.62% Obama (ca. 284) vs. 47.13% Romney (ca. 254)*.

    * about as scientific as picking ‘Mount Athos’ for tomorrows race.

  • @m.j.kroner #4 – To be accurate, Hitler was nominally a Catholic: he didn’t go to public Mass and he never had a chaplain, so it was unlikely he heard Mass privately.

But it is a matter of public record that he placed a huge amount of importance on God and Christianity. In Mein Kampf, he wrote, “I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord.” Every speech, no matter how short, placed a great deal of importance on Christian belief and doctrine for the good of the Fatherland. He was almost… well, Republican like that.

As Mr. Brayton points out in a later post today, there is voter suppression going on in Ohio and Florida. My prediction is that Romney will carry both states and be elected president tomorrow. Once again, the Rethuglicans steal the election. And if the other side goes to court, the Supreme Court, led by Justice Scalia will sanctify their theft.

  • One suspects a lot of these kind of people get their historical knowledge from episodes of Hogan’s Heroes they haven’t seen in 30 years.

  • slc1

    Re Gregory @ #10 & Kroner @ #4

Frankenberger’s favorite architect, Albert Speer wrote in his memoir, after being released from prison, that the former once told him that Shintoism would have been a better religious choice for Germany because of its Bushido tradition. He indicated that he considered Christianity rather effete. It would seem that his devotion to Christianity was mostly verbal and for public consumption.

  • dingojack

SLC1 – You really are a barrel o’ laffs this morning aren’t you?

Albert Speer’s testimony should be taken with a grain of salt, he was trying to rationalise his former position and get himself out of jail, remember.

Originally I spelt jail as ‘jaol’, clearly I was going for an each way bet. 8)

  • slc1

    Re dingojack

As I understand it, most historians give considerable credence to Speer’s memoirs. That doesn’t mean that he was always truthful; however, I fail to see how claiming that Frankenberger preferred Shintoism to Christianity in any way, shape, form, or regard assists him in his attempted whitewash of his activities in the Third Reich.

  • dingojack

No, no, I tend to agree with you, like most US presidents for the last century or so (for example), public piety was strictly for the peanut gallery.

  • The US is LITERALLY becoming Nazi Germany. I’m starting to spreche German more often, and I’m finding an awful lot of lederhosen in meinem Schrank.

  • dingojack

Speer was notorious for telling people what he thought they would like to hear. In was in this sense he was whitewashing and rationalising. We don’t know whether his recollections were completely candid or not* (although I suspect the former in this particular case).

    * Or any of the other former Nazi officials who wrote memoirs, for that matter

  • dingojack

Katherine have you lost mein handi recently?

I blame Creeping Nazi Germany Syndrome(CNGS)!

  • @dingojack, slc1 – As I said, there is no supporting evidence that Hitler was religious: it it is a constant theme in his writings and speeches but not in his personal life. Thus, my comparison between him and most Republicans.

  • steve84

There were some half-baked plans to dismantle established Christianity after a victory against Russia and replace it with a mix of Christian and Nazi ideology. But they knew perfectly well that they couldn’t do it during the war. The population was far too religious for that and they needed the popular support. So they cut down the power of the church a bit and gained influence over personnel decisions (just like in every single other organization), but otherwise left them be if they were quiet.

  • @dingojack:

I believe you meant “dein Handy” but most likely, ja. Mein Handy ist unter meinem Bett.

  • cptdoom

It’s interesting the video points out school-led prayer has been banned for some 50 years (of course, they ignore the reality that any student who wants to pray certainly still can – and the wingnuts take advantage of that with their “Rally round the flagpole” organized annual student prayer events”). Yet somehow it’s only now that we’re becoming this allegedly fascist state? Fifty years ago the organized right-wing Christian political machine did not exist – it was the reaction to Roe v. Wade and the rise of the anti-gay hate movement under Anita Bryant that gave it teeth. How could such a movement grow and prosper in an oppressive state? Oh, wait, I’m applying logic again, how stupid of me.

  • Chiroptera

…all declaring that because we’ve kicked God out of our politics, America is now becoming just like Nazi Germany.

I haven’t watched the video yet, but they are talking about the Executive Branch’s ability to acquire cell-phone records without a warrant, hold people without trial, and wage war without an act of Congress, right?

“Fœtuses are like jewish kids sent to the camps, oh nononononononononononononononononono”

    Wait a minute.

When was the last time I heard that?

Oh yes: when I heard french neo-nazis claiming that the left was the real fascists because they “treated fœetuses like jewish children”

So to anyone interested, let it be known that american fundies sound just like French neo-nazis. I rest my case.

It’s true: if there was a tiny Jewish parasite living inside me, I would probably make many of the same arguments for removing him as women make for having the right to abort babies.

  • @dingojack:

:p At least I didn’t say “probably” under my bed. That’s a fun word.

Speer’s memoirs were originally given credence by a good many historians, but fewer these days. See for example Adam Tooze The Wages of Destruction: The Making and Breaking of the Nazi Economy, which demolishes Speer’s self-serving account of how he revolutionised German armaments production. What no serious historian gives any credence to is the silly tale, told by Hitler’s former lawyer Hans Frank, that your fellow genocidal maniac’s paternal grandfather was a Jew called Leopold Frankenberger, whose very existence is completely undocumented.

“The National Government …regards Christianity as the foundation of our national morality, and the family as the basis of national life….”

    —Adolf Hitler, 1933

Why don’t they run quotes like this (and there are many) across their little screen?

  • Freodin

Regarding us germans and our “handys”… it has been explained in this way.

When mobile phones were first introduced in Swabia (the south-western part of Germany, which is known by the famous slogan: “we can do everything, except speak high german”), they were met with the reaction of “Jo, hän di koi Schnuur?” (Translation into german: “Ja, haben die kein Kabel?” – translation in foreignese “Well, don’t they have cables?”

The xtian authoritarians are blaming liberals for increasing authoritarianism? This must be more of that newspeak stuff.

The details of the factual errors in the piece somehow seem somewhat irrelevant given that the foundations are beyond bogus.
