Is the Pope Trying to Escape Arrest?

Is the Pope Trying to Escape Arrest? February 15, 2013

An organization calling itself the International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State (ITCCS) is alleging that Pope Benedict XVI resigned from his position in order to escape a potential arrest for helping cover up child abuse and is seeking the protection of the Italian government.

Pope Benedict, Joseph Ratzinger, has scheduled a meeting with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano for Saturday, February 23 to discuss securing protection and immunity from prosecution from the Italian government, according to Italian media sources.

Ratzinger’s meeting follows upon the apparent receipt by the Vatican of a diplomatic note from an undisclosed European government on February 4, stating its intention to issue an arrest warrant for Ratzinger, who resigned from his pontificate less than a week later.

In response to the February 23 meeting, the International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State (ITCCS), through its field Secretary, Rev. Kevin Annett, has written to President Napolitano, asking him to refrain from assisting Ratzinger in evading justice.

The ITCCS letter states, in part,

“I need not remind you, Mr. President, that under international law and treaties that have been ratified by Italy, you and your government are forbidden from granting such protection to those like Joseph Ratzinger who have aided and abetted criminal actions, such as ordering Bishops and Cardinals in America and elsewhere to protect known child rapists among their clergy.

“Your obligation to the Vatican through the Lateran Treaty does not negate or nullify the requirements of these higher moral and international laws; nor does it require that you give any protection or immunity to a single individual like Joseph Ratzinger, especially after he has left his papal office.”

Now, I have no idea if this is credible. The ITCCS may be a bunch of nuts for all I know. And the fact that they describe themselves this way doesn’t scream credibility to me:

On this basis, our Tribunal has been established to enforce common law and try and convict the institutions and their officers responsible for such historic and ongoing crimes against humanity. We therefore constitute a de jure Court under common law, with full power of arrest, conviction and enforcement.

This sounds a lot like those “citizen grand juries” going on around the country to “indict” President Obama for being a Kenyan Muslim illegal alien communist. So I’m going to take this with a grain of salt until I see some information from an actual court or government body.

I have no idea to the actual extent this may be true, but it was always my understanding that the Vatican is a sovereign state or at least largely equivalent to one. Arresting the pope and charging him with a crime is equivalent to arresting the leader of a sovereign state and charging him with a crime. It has occured, but usually only after they are kicked from power, and even then very rarely. Pinochet and Charles Taylor are the only two that come to mind in recent memory.

This sounds like nutcase conspiracy theory to me. I wouldn’t give these guys any credence.

  • DaveL

I fail to see how resigning from the Papacy would make him any less vulnerable to prosecution. They seem to realize that as well:

Your obligation to the Vatican through the Lateran Treaty does not negate or nullify the requirements of these higher moral and international laws; nor does it require that you give any protection or immunity to a single individual like Joseph Ratzinger, especially after he has left his papal office.”

This chain of logic just does not hold up.

  • ralphwiggam

He was forced to resign because he got caught stealing office supplies. Those post-it notes and Bic pens are not free!

  • glodson

If he is trying to escape arrest, then why would he resign? It would seem that holding the office of the Pope would be a great way to keep from being arrested….

Anyone have the phone number of the Spanish judge that tried to indict the “Bush Six” for torture?

Baltasar Garzón, your our only hope. Baltasar Garzón, your our only hope. Baltasar Garzón, your our only hope.

  • Whoever these people are, they’ve managed to get their story — suspicious little gaps and all — splashed all over the ‘tubes. Offhand, it all looks to be the same story through multiple (non-obviusly-reliable) web sites.

And they all say the warrant was issued by “a European nation.” If there was a warrant, wouldn’t we be hearing which nation issued it? Why would that particular fact be concealed?

Also, the ITCCS site has a link to an article by a “Dr. Mercola,” which complains of legal child abductin, and has a photo of a doctor grabbing a kid by his shirt If that’s THE Dr. Mercola, that’s a major blow to ITCCS’s credibility.

  • laurentweppe

If the pope did want to escape arrest ad vitam eternam, he just had to remain pope. I vote for the nutcases explanation.

  • The ITCCS site seems to feature a Kevin Annett, who has been accused — by ONE source that I know of, to be fair — of such things as pretending to find Native American mass graves and pretending to be a champion of indigenous peoples.

In fairness, this means Annet could really be full of shit — or there could be a concerted attempt to discredit him because of his advocacy for indigenous people.

One might want to ask the Crommunist what he knows of this guy.

It would seem highly likely that Ratty jumped ship to cower in a monastery for the rest of his unnatural life.

The on going kiddy fiddling and his deep involvement in cover up being the chief architect of perverting the course of justice in so many countries seem to have persuaded the Vatican that best policy is to stash him away from public gaze and away from awkward incriminating questions.

I have no idea if the ITCCS are a credible force…I hope they are, but it does not ring totally legit.

What is required is a government to demand prosecution, and I doubt there is one government in the world that has the integrity or the cojones to even contemplate that course of action, they would all rather grovel before a fairy story then stand up for truth.

Shame cos Benny is going to walk away from the evil committed on his watch and in which he enthusiastically endorsed if not encouraged if not actively participated in, what a nasty vicious dirty little old man with such a perverted sense of honour and honesty.

A liar, a charlatan, and a monster, a total insult to humanity and a sad indictment of the IQ level the shoddy legions that drool after his every word.

  • busterggi

Nonsense! All Ratzi would have to do is stand on the steps of the nearest catherdral and cry, “Sanctuary, sanctuary!” It worked for Quasimodo.

Hey, Crommunist is not the only Canuck who blogs here (how about Jason Thibeault who blogs as the Lousy Canuck).

From digging around a bit it seems that this is just one of those citizens courts. One flag is the mention of Eurostaete, that place is an area between the Netherlands and Germany which neither country claims. With a decent running start you can jump across that area (it’s about 6 meters or 21′).

Aside from the reasons mentioned earlier about why it would be stupid to abdicate there are better reasons for Ratzinger to quit.

This is a person who genuinely believes he is working for the good of the RCC. But he can’t even control the people in the Vatican let alone get them to work on the reforms he thinks are needed to strengthen the RCC. Then there is the fact that him being the pope is resulting in that office being tarred and feathered along with him for his role in the abuse cover up. Further him being alive allows him some influence in who’ll be his successor.

The only way it makes sense Ratzinger resigning as pope having anything to do with the child rape cover-ups, is if his motivation was to protect the Church. After all, that was the motivation behind that wonderful document of his and it’s anyone’s best bet that there would have been plenty of people giving him a nudge or two in that direction if they thought he was only going to hurt the Church’s image in the long run.

Maybe the motherfucker actually realised what a horribly part he’d had in the cover-ups and how much it was his fault. Not that I for a moment think he’s worried about what happened to the children, but youknow, the pope gotta protect the Church.

  • It’d be nice if Ratzinger could get hauled before the ICC in the Hague, but that would depend on the Vatican having agreed to submit itself to ICC authority. Too lazy to look it up but I doubt it.

@Raging Bee, #9 – I’ve come across Annett’s claims in my travels, although not in person (I’m Canadian). I think thes a strong probability that Annett is a nutter. He was a United Church of Canada minster who got involved in homelessness issues, which is not a bad thing, but started neglecting the core minitsry he’d been assigned to, redirecting funds and playing wierd head games with his congregants. He was repeatedly warned and eventually fired. He claims the UCC conspired to end his marriage and that it was all a set-up.

From there, he got involved in the Residential school issues, taking on leadership of groups and making claims on their behalf, including mass graves at at least one residential school site and allegations of ritual sexual abuse and murder. One claim was that the Queen Elizabeth toured one of the schools in BC secretly and took 10 children for “picnic” in the woods and they were never seen again. It’s alleged that she took part in the ritual abuse and human sacrifice of those children. Except that for the year claimed, she does not appear to have been in Western Canada, and may not have been to Canada at all in the time frame (1968? Something like that.).

Annett has been dismissed from several residential school groups for taking liberties and passing himself off as their official leadership when First Nations members have felt that this was inappropriate for a white guy. Which it is.

In any case, at the very least he is a highly problematic and suspicious character and I don’t think he has a great deal of credibility.

  • One claim was that the Queen Elizabeth toured one of the schools in BC secretly and took 10 children for “picnic” in the woods and they were never seen again.

A conspiracy run by the Queen?! Wow, this guy sounds like a LaRouchie.

And ritual abuse allegations? That’s so eighties.

    Thanks for the info, 24fps.

  • “What is required is a government to demand prosecution, and I doubt there is one government in the world that has the integrity or the cojones to even contemplate that course of action,”

Oh, yeah, well you know who WOULD have the integrity of his cojones to do that? No, not ‘dolfie, that other atheomuslimonster Joe Stalin! I mean he’d smirk and say, “How many lawyers does the pope have?”. And, when informed that the pope is neck deep in shysters would say, “Well, fuck it, how many DIVISIONS does he have?!”.

The Vatican could have avoided all of this public brouhaha if they had just disposed of the problem the way they are alleged to have done with PJ the First.

  • lofgren

The version of this story that I heard is that he resigned because the pope must be able to travel to other countries, and the legal complexities resulting from both the abuse scandal and the money laundering scandals were too much of a headache. Even if no country has yet issued a warrant, they didn’t want to deal with the risk that one would be issued and then that country and any country that had extradition treaties with that country would become too great a risk for the pope to travel to.

No, I don’t buy this version either. But it has the advantage of not being dependent on verifiable facts (like whether or not a warrant has actually been issued).

  • boadinum

It seems that the ITCCS [] is a dodgy organization. While I wish that there was a credible international group that would take on the task of prosecuting Razi, the ITCCS is not it. They seem to more like a bunch of conspiracy theorists.

@ Raging Bee (#17), while I don’t know and don’t care about the Queen’s habits when she tours the colonies, it does seem unlikely that abducting children are among them. Philip, well…

Annett [] points out that the RCC, through the residential schools for Native Peoples, which it ran for a century, is guilty of horrific crimes of sexual, physical, and mental abuse. This is true. However, he then pulls numbers out of his ass which show that the mortality rate among these children approached 50%. While all Canadians are rightfully ashamed of the residential schools scandals, such an astonishing death rate would surely have been noticed.

Annett is virulently anti-catholic, as am I, but as a United Church of Canada minister himself his motives are suspect. As 24fps (# 16) says, Annett has very little credibility. He advocates the seizure of Vatican property (to take place on Easter Sunday, no less), but doesn’t point out how this can be done legally (or morally). I would like to see the stolen treasue of the Vatican returned to their rightful owners, but again, in the absence of legal authority it ain’t gonna happen. Perhaps the government of Italy can overturn the deal Pope Pius XII made with Mussolini and have the Vatican become just another (posh but slutty) jurisdiction of Rome.

Democommie (# 18) and lofgren (#19) both suggest that no country in the world would have the “cojones”

(Democommie) to attempt to prosecute a pope (sitting or otherwise, my interpretation). Sadly correct. In 2010, when Razi visited England, the Irish sex abuse scandals were front page news, and many thousands of people demanded that the British government have nothing to do with hosting the papal visit…to no effect.

(BTW, Democommie, I’d love to read about how the Vatican disposed of PJ (JP?) I. He didn’t last long enough to be despised. Please post a link.

Sorry for rambling. I’m trying to follow this and get my head around it as I find it…to many pages open. Thanks for listening. Oh, and good riddance, Razi.

after the release of the personal letters by the Pope’s butler a while back, sounds to me like you more likely could chalk this up to “golden parachute” type behavior.

most of the vatican power structure apparently didn’t like this Pope much, as he planned to attack the political and economic corruption rampant there (motivations aside).

seems there is a LOT of illegal kickbacks and brokered contracting deals, and he was trying to do something about that.

so, they hold the child abuse scandal over his head, and force him to retire. Hell, didn’t they force the butler to resign too, for “leaking ” the pope’s private letters? They even tossed him in the Vatican jail IIRC.

so, the more plausible conspiracy scenario is that the family gave the Pope an offer he couldn’t refuse…

makes me wonder why Bertone’s name is not coming up in this…

  • Paul JaYmes

The Pope is safe in the Vatican but expected to travel while in office. With Ratzinger resigned he can hide out in the Vatican immune from prosecution and never leave.

A more credible news source here –

  • @20:

There are, afaia, no credible documents/reports regarding that pope’s brief tenure–just a shitton of rumors and conspiracy theories. Considering, however, the RCC’s current and past predilection for committing all sorts of egregious crimes or covering the criminals afterwards I would not bet against it.

  • If you are waiting for a government to acknowledge the fact that this is happening, you are missing the whole story my friend. The US Government won’t acknowledge drone attacks, but we all know it to be true. The Central Bank has stolen the resources of almost all Government through theft of money through double taxation by interest charged on the People’s money, theft of resources by using the taxed labor of the people to wage wars against each other at profit, and actively participating in war tactics outside the scope of the Geneva Convention in regards to the humanitarian acts of war.

Their resources are not their resources, they are Our resources. We, the People of the World, will no longer willingly consent to the theft of resource through educated ignorance to the facts. We all have as much wealth as we have debt, as it is the “central bank” that we all owe, which is funded with the tax dollars of our ancestors and ourselves. This move will not devalue currency, but add to it. It will devalue “things”.

  • As the author of one of several blogs seeking to expose this shyster, I wanted to update those in the comment section of the recent developments.

    1. Annett who once claimed to have many ITCCS members has lost his core group

    2. Annett slandered two members of his ITCCS ‘team’, accusing them of taking bribes from Bishop D’airmud Martin of the Dublin Diocese.

    3. Annett has set his sights on Pope Francis, stating he has an eyewitness to crimes committed in Argentina by the new Pope.

    4. Annett claimed to have worked with ‘vatican insiders’ to depose Pope Benedict, he now claims that Benedict still retains power.

    5. Annett took advantage of a family’s run in with Child Advocacy Services in Ontario, Canada, making claims that it was because of their activities promoting ITCCS that Steve Finney was arrested. The real issue surrounded Steve’s access to his girlfriends daughter who was in another relatives custody at the time. Finney did not help the case in family court when he claimed that Kevin Annett ordered him to hide the child during a visitation so as to use the child as a bargaining chip with authorities. Finney has claimed to know ‘sovereign and common-law’ and got himself arrested for taking his licence plate off and replacing it with the ‘Republik of Kanata’ flag…

    6. The European state that Kevin flogged out there so much is called Eurostaete (yes that’s correct spelling) and it is a stretch of contested ditch between Norway and Sweden.

    7. There is no George Dufort (that is to say he is a fiction – created by Kevin Annett to make his ‘court documents’ appear legal.) This means that George Dufort is Kevin Annett and therefore the whole Tribunal is a ruse (for this reason among others) as how can a ‘magistrate’ of the court not exist? Also, Kevin is guilty of fraud and forgery.

    8. Kevin Annett is well funded by Alfred Webre (accused of being a Knight of Malta/Jesuit Co-Adjutor and Judge in the Malaysian Citizens Tribunal that tried G.W. Bush for War Crimes). Webre runs an ‘Exopolitics blog/University’ and believes Obama visited Mars.

    9. Annett supports Belgian Independant MP Laurent Louis who has been decried in the media for being an anti-semite and Nazi supporter…

    10. Annett claims he will be in Brussels to ‘try’ Pope Francis for war crimes, crimes against humanity and the usual drivel…on March 31 of this year. European officials are indeed concerned about his seditious behavior according to people who have spoken with members of the RCC.

    11. A concerted effort by members of Anonymous (IT hackers and provocateurs) on Facebook and Twitter and elsewhere has been undertaken with Kevin Annetts direction to take out Greg Renouf ( and myself ( for speaking out about this con-artist. This effort has includes blogs featured on that slander and libel myself and others, as well as personal attacks on private messaging, threats to contact my employer, and threats of bodily harm by Kevin himself.

    12. To date NO PERSON in authority has made an effort to contact myself or Greg Renouf or others who have considerable evidence of fraud, libel, threats of bodily harm, interference, domestic terrorism, sedition, impersonation, forgery, etc… Despite claims that Kevin is wanted in Canada and the UK for sedition.
