Wingnut: Sex Ed Makes Teens ‘Hot and Bothered’

Wingnut: Sex Ed Makes Teens ‘Hot and Bothered’ July 10, 2013

State legislatures are usually where the real crazy can be found and the state of Texas is exhibit A. The same legislature that produced Warren Chisum, who sent his colleagues a memo encouraging them to read a geocentrist website, has now produced Rep. Steve Toth, who told this story during a hearing on sex ed:

“My wife worked at a home for unwed moms, and one of the little kids that was born, his name is David. David came about as a result of his mom and dad, who were just 16 at the time, going to a Planned Parenthood deal where they taught them how to use contraceptives. They were not sexually active at that point. They got into the car, and they were so hot and bothered from this deal, he couldn’t even get the condom on.”

They do love their anecdotes, don’t they? No evidence needed, just an anonymous story that can never be checked out and is patently ridiculous. And of course, those poor unnamed kids would never have thought to have sex if they hadn’t been taught about condoms. If we just never mention condoms to teenagers, it will never occur to them to want to have sex.
