Perkins, Huckabee Display Boycott Hypocrisy

Perkins, Huckabee Display Boycott Hypocrisy April 17, 2014

One of the most amusing things to me about the Christian right is how utterly oblivious they are to their own contradictions (alternatively, how cravenly dishonest they are about them). On Tony Perkins’ radio show, he and Mike Huckabee said that Christian conservatives would never target a company over its support of gay rights. Yes, your head should be hitting the desk right about now.

Huckabee says that “nobody” is boycotting Starbucks over their liberal stances and Perkins says, “Yeah, I think that’s a good point.” As Right Wing Watch points out, Perkins is, in fact, one of the leading boycotters over gay rights in the country:

Of course, Perkins was being totally disingenuous as he has personally endorsed several boycott campaigns…including a boycott of Starbucks over its stance on gay rights.

Perkins and his group, the Family Research Council, championed a boycott of Girl Scouts cookies, and helped lead boycott campaigns targeting companies like McDonalds and Wal-Mart [PDF] over their stances on gay rights.

Last year, Perkins called for a boycott of Betty Crocker after the company donated custom cakes to same-sex weddings after Minnesota approved marriage equality.

This one is too stupid and hypocritical even for their own followers, who surely know that they’re being called on constantly to boycott businesses by the very people who are denying that they ever do so. They lie as easily as they breathe.

They also boycotted UPS because UPS stopped donating to the boy scouts. It was a boycott in response to another boycott.

  • My guess is that their boycott was so unsuccessful, so unnoticeable, that they figured it never took place.

Compartmentalization taken to a whole new level.

    theschwa @ 2,

I guess Orwell’s “We’ve always been at war with Eastasia” was not so ridiculous after all.

But is Huckabee ignorant of this, delusional, or just trolling Perkins?

  • Chiroptera

Huckabee says that “nobody” is boycotting Starbucks over their liberal stances and Perkins says, “Yeah, I think that’s a good point.”

Well, in the sense of an eight year old trying to argue on a technicality, it is technically true that nobody is currently boycotting Starbucks. If I recall correctly, boycotts were called, but either not even very many Christianists paid attention or Christianists already don’t go to Starbucks. The boycotts were a dismal failure.

Huckabee is at least as much of a liar as Perkins is.

IOKIYLFJ (It’s OK if you’re lying for Jebus)

The difference is that their boycotts never work, and barely anybody knows or cares about them.

In fact, they were counting on that when they said they would never boycott. Essentially theirs are so ineffective, they don’t.

  • This make me think of the old Simpsons episode where Homer doesn’t recognise the name Sideshow Bob. Once Bart and Lisa explain who Bob is Homer goes “Oh, SideSHOW Bob!” These jokers seem to think their audience will be the same, that they will think boycotts aren’t boyCOTTS.

timgueguen: “These jokers seem to think their audience will be the same, that they will think boycotts aren’t boyCOTTS.”

Well, can you think of a safer bet?

  • AsqJames

I think it’s more that they actually think their “boycotts” are inherently different to “liberal boycotts”, in the sense that one word can have multiple definitions.

When conservatives/christians/real americans boycott a company or organisation, they are personally refusing to give moral or financial comfort to the enemies of conservatism/christ/america.

When liberals/atheists/traitors boycott something, they are trying to force somebody else to behave in a way they find acceptable.

No, I know there really is no difference. I know they are two (exaggerated) sides of the same thing, and their failure to see that is hypocrisy. But I really do think they think there is a fundamental difference.

No, no … It’s “We’ve always been at war with Eastgaysia”

They lie as easily as they breathe.

Is it wrong to wish that they could no longer lie…?

I really wish they would stop.

Not so fast, andrewpang. The other RWNJs are a persistent and competitive bunch. Let them have their shot at the prize.
