Libby Phelps Joins NOH8 Campaign

Libby Phelps Joins NOH8 Campaign June 14, 2014

Libby Phelps, grandson of Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps and niece of Nate, has joined the NOH8 campaign and posted this amazing picture on her Facebook wall.

Libby and Megan Phelps-Roper escaped the family and are now showing the world a different model than the one of hate their grandfather and parents taught. Powerful voices for equality.

Umm, Ed? I don’t think Libby is the grandson of anyone.

  • Trebuchet

@1: That would be kind of awesome though!

Her hands covering whatever’s at the bottom of her necklace intrigue me. Presumably it’s a cross. Perhaps some kind of symbolism there?

  • borax

This makes me happy. People can be raised in a hateful environment and come out good.

  • diesel213

Indeed borax, it does give one hope, and that is a rare and beautiful thing.

  • @Trebuchet #2 – I see it as hands over her heart. It may be an “I promise” gesture, an “I’m so sorry for what I was a part of in the past” gesture, or the beginning of a “my heart goes out” gesture. Or it may just be a pose to show off her wedding ring, adding an “I’m a straight ally despite my family history” intent.

I wouldn’t read too much into it.

  • dingojack

Hiding her cross (if indeed that is what it is) screams to me:

‘We’re gay, we’re glad – just don’t tell mom and dad!’*

    * thanks to The Simpsons.

  • Trebuchet

A couple of the other images on the FB page show the necklace uncovered. Resolution is poor, but it doesn’t appear to be a cross.

  • matty1

I’m inclined to agree with 5, it’s ‘hand on my heart’ symbolism not ‘covering the cross’ symbolism.

  • anubisprime

Whether some deep attempt at symbolism or no…I salute those that have walked away from the hate and bigotry that epitomized that abomination of a so called church.

It is to be hoped that the whole project implodes sooner rather then later…with Fred trying to explain to a few pissed off arch angels about his bona_fide’s…it would appear more likely and not less that westboro is becoming just a nasty little smell as a footnote in the annals Kansas!

Grandson? Don’t you mean “granddaughter”? Or possibly “grandchild” if you want to avoid bringing up sex/gender at all.

  • StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return!

Yep. Bloody awesome and well done.

No hate from or for these Phelps.
