Dave Agema, the incredibly bigoted and ignorant Republican National Committee member from Michigan, has taken a huge amount of criticism from Republican officials, even being censured by the RNC itself. But Susan Demas explains why he isn’t going anywhere: Because he’s highly popular among the Republican rank and file in the state.
“Make no mistake about it – [the] crazy racist, homophobic and xenophobic National Committeeman has tremendous power in the Michigan GOP. … If [Dave] Agema were to run for reelection to his post, he would win.” — Republican consultant Joe Munem after attending the Feb. 20-21 Michigan GOP state convention…
But each outrageous statement has inspired criticism from more Republicans, including Gov. Rick Snyder (who hasn’t gone so far as to call for his resignation) and former Michigan GOP Chair Bobby Schostak (who has).
The Republican National Committee last month even censured Agema. But it’s up to the Michigan GOP to remove him. As I told Slate, the group can do so if the will is there.
But given the strong Agema support from many Republican delegates and activists at this weekend’s state convention, you can see why he’s still there.
And after her election, new Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel made it crystal clear that Agema was staying.
GOP consultant Joe Munem used to be too far right for the party (and in the interest of full disclosure, formerly did a podcast with my husband). Now Munem been lumped in with wild lefties for demanding party candidates take a stand on Agema’s removal and advising they stay away from fringe issues, like vaccine denial.
Munem fired off a series of highly entertaining convention posts for a new blog designed for the occasion, “Alternative GOP Lifestyle.” Most revealing was Munem’s frustration that many Republicans had “assured me that Ronna was going to do something Dave Agema AFTER being elected.”
When McDaniel — the queen of the establishment who hails from one of the wealthiest and most powerful political families in the country — can’t stand up to Agema, you can only come to one conclusion:
He has the support of a significant number of Republicans…
But I suspect the reason why Agema remains isn’t the hardcore bigots. It’s because many Republicans will steadfastly defend one of their own no matter what. Any controversy has to be manufactured by Democrats and the “liberal media.”
They love the way Agema sticks it to the media, flaunts liberal ideals and never backs down.
Condemning him would mean liberals might be right about something — and that can never, ever happen.
Bingo. The rank and file in almost any tribe love the guy who screams the loudest and makes the rival tribe angry, so they’re allowed to continue being an idiot. And in today’s GOP, there is no extreme that is too extreme. The fringe is now the mainstream.
