Duggar Admits to Ashley Madison Account, Begs Forgiveness

Duggar Admits to Ashley Madison Account, Begs Forgiveness August 20, 2015

A lot of people were expressing skepticism about the allegations that Josh Duggar had an account at Ashley Madison after Gawker published it. I thought the case based on the raw data was pretty solid, so I decided to run with the story about it. There was still a possibility that it was fake, but it seemed very unlikely to me. Now Josh has publicly admitted it in a statement calling himself the “biggest hypocrite ever.” Here’s the full statement:

Statement from Josh Duggar:

I have been the biggest hypocrite ever. While espousing faith and family values, I have been unfaithful to my wife.

I am so ashamed of the double life that I have been living and am grieved for the hurt, pain and disgrace my sin has caused my wife and family, and most of all Jesus and all those who profess faith in Him.

I have brought hurt and a reproach to my family, close friends and the fans of our show with my actions.

The last few years, while publicly stating I was fighting against immorality in our country I was hiding my own personal failures.

As I am learning the hard way, we have the freedom to choose our actions, but we do not get to choose our consequences. I deeply regret all the hurt I have caused so many by being such a bad example.

I humbly ask for your forgiveness. Please pray for my precious wife Anna and our family during this time.

I couldn’t possibly care any less about him cheating on his wife. That simply isn’t any of my business, it’s between them. My criticism all along has been of the rank hypocrisy of someone going out every single day and calling other people sexual degenerates and blaming gay people for supposedly destroying the institution of marriage while doing a damn fine job of destroying his own without any help from gay marriage.

And while this sounds like genuine contrition, I do notice the seeds of the next phase of his moralistic crusade in the attempt to blame it all on addiction to porn. I predict that, after some respectable amount of time undergoing “godly counseling,” he will reemerge as a crusader against porn. His schtick will be obvious: Look at what porn did to even someone like me, a man of God! That’s how dangerous it is! He may even hook up with Judith Reisman and blather on about “erototoxins” that messed up his brain and made him cheat on his wife — “I didn’t want to! Porn made me do it!”

I doubt he has any intention of ending his career as a professional schoolmarm tut-tutting at all the naughty little kids. He will just incorporate his behavior into the next stage of his career and keep on making lots of money on the Christian rubber chicken circuit as a walking, talking cautionary tale of how the devil is so powerful and devious that he can turn even a fine, upstanding Christian like him into a slave to sin and sex. The Christian right’s endless war on orgasms will continue and so will Josh Duggar’s profitable role in it.

Update: So it seems this statement was edited. When I first read it, there was a direct mention of addiction to porn and to his having molested his younger sisters. Both have been edited out. Here’s the original statement:

I have been the biggest hypocrite ever. While espousing faith and family values, I have secretly over the last several years been viewing pornography on the internet and this became a secret addiction and I became unfaithful to my wife.

I am so ashamed of the double life that I have been living and am grieved for the hurt, pain and disgrace my sin has caused my wife and family, and most of all Jesus and all those who profess faith in Him.

I brought hurt and a reproach to my family, close friends and the fans of our show with my actions that happened when I was 14-15 years old, and now I have re-broken their trust.

The last few years, while publicly stating I was fighting against immorality in our country, I was hiding my own personal failings.

As I am learning the hard way, we have the freedom to choose to our actions, but we do not get to choose our consequences. I deeply regret all hurt I have caused so many by being such a bad example.

I humbly ask for your forgiveness. Please pray for my precious wife Anna and our family during this time.
