Iran: New Sanctions Will End Nuclear Agreement

Iran: New Sanctions Will End Nuclear Agreement August 16, 2017

Here’s the most predictable thing ever. Even though our intelligence services and the United Nations have certified that Iran is in full compliance with the agreement to end their nuclear weapons program, Trump has threatened to impose new sanctions for other things. Iran says they’ll pull out entirely if it goes any further.

Iran could abandon its nuclear agreement with world powers “within hours” if the United States imposes any more new sanctions, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday.

“If America wants to go back to the experience (of imposing sanctions), Iran would certainly return in a short time — not a week or a month but within hours — to conditions more advanced than before the start of negotiations,” Rouhani told a session of parliament broadcast live on state television.

Iran says new sanctions that the United States has imposed on it breach the agreement it reached in 2015 with the United States, Russia, China and three European powers in which it agreed to curb its nuclear work in return for the lifting of most sanctions.

The U.S. Treasury imposed sanctions on six Iranian firms in late July for their role in the development of a ballistic missile program after Tehran launched a rocket capable of putting a satellite into orbit.

But that launch did not violate the agreement. They can have rocket technology, which does nothing to advance any nuclear weapons program. Trump has been railing against that agreement since it was signed, not because he has any idea what’s actually in it but because he knew he could strike the tough guy pose by being “tough” on Iran. But the agreement that Obama signed was a very tough agreement, putting remarkable limitations on their nuclear program that brought any advance toward developing nuclear weapons to a screeching halt.

Trump simply doesn’t believe in diplomacy, he only believes in striking macho poses because his base values “toughness” (so-called) over thoughtfulness or intelligence. The agreement Obama and several other countries (including his pal Putin) signed with Iran was a huge step forward in stabilizing the Middle East and it has helped push important moderate reforms inside that country as well. Trump’s ignorance and inability to think clearly on this or any other issue puts that all in jeopardy and only strengthens the hand of the hardliners in Iran.
