Trump Attacks Basketball, Football Players September 24, 2017

Donald Trump may take his sweet time half-condemning neo-Nazis and white supremacists, but he’s quick on the draw to go after professional athletes who dare to speak out against injustice and inequality — or who just don’t like him. He started during his appearance on behalf of Luther Strange in Alabama.

During that appearance he said, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out. He’s fired! He’s fired!'” The audience cheered wildly, of course. Reaction from NFL players and owners was swift. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called the comments “divisive” and said they show’d a “lack of respect” for players speaking their minds, so naturally Trump immediately tweeted back:

You know what I think disrespects the country? Lying constantly, about everything, while leading it. Undermining the rule of law. Using the bully pulpit of the presidency to get people fired for exercising their rights. Not giving a fuck about justice or equality. Being a demagogue who whips up a crowd of highly emotionally dumbasses into a frenzy over simpleminded, shallow and symbolic nationalism. Trying to take health care access away from tens of millions of people (again, while lying about doing so).

This is the kind of idiocy that his base eats up with a spoon because they care more about symbols than substance. To them, patriotism means nothing except sending out tribal signals. It’s never about improving the tribe (that is, the country) or doing the right thing, it’s just about going through the rote motions that allegedly show “respect” for the tribe. It’s nonsense aimed at simpletons.

Then he decided to take his ball and go home after the Golden State Warriors players said they were going to take a vote on whether to take the traditional post-championship trip to the White House.

Is there an adult in charge at the White House? Can we get one? This man is a child. “You can’t quit, you’re fired! I didn’t wanna go to your stupid birthday party anyway!” Golden State’s response was perfect:

Good. On their first trip to DC to play the Wizards, they should hold some sort of pro-justice and pro-equality event. In fact, I’d love to see the players on that team stage a protest at the White House. Then watch Trump lose his crap over it again.

And of course, we cite Trump’s third law: For every Trump tweet, there is an equal and opposite tweet that contradicts it:
