John Kelly’s Surreal False Equivalence

John Kelly’s Surreal False Equivalence November 1, 2017

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly did an interview with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham in which he came off as just about as ignorant and ridiculous as his boss, Donald Trump. For example, he said that the Civil War was caused by a lack of compromise on both sides.

Kelly argued during the debut of Laura Ingraham’s new Fox News show, “The Ingraham Angle,” that “history is history” and the Confederate statues should stay.

“There are certain things in history that were good, and other things that were not so good,” Kelly said. “The lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War, and men and women of good faith on both sides made their stand where their conscience had them make their stand.”

The fact that one side’s conscience had them make their stand in favor of owning people is apparently not the least bit relevant to him. They both had their moral opinions and who are we to say that one is better than the other, amirite?

And I love these generic endorsements of compromise without any specific potential compromise that would have avoided having to fight the war to end slavery. Should we have just let them keep owning some black people, but not all of them? Should they have been allowed to own only male slaves but not female ones? Let them own slaves as long as they only worked them 100 hours a week and provided them with better food? Hey, here’s an idea: Maybe we should have let them continue to own slaves, but only if they were their own white children. Do you suppose they would have gone for that compromise? This is idiocy on roller skates.

I used to think that John Kelly was one of the adults in the room at the White House, but that belief is becoming much harder to maintain.
