A Democratic member of the House Intelligence Committee says that there is a rumor going around Capitol Hill that Donald Trump will fire Robert Mueller this week. If he’s going to do it, it would seem like the ideal time, the ultimate Friday night news dump right before Christmas.
Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) said Friday that “rumors” on Capitol Hill suggest President Trump could fire special counsel Robert Mueller before Christmas, after Congress leaves Washington for the winter recess.
“The rumor on the Hill when I left yesterday was that the president was going to make a significant speech at the end of next week. And on Dec. 22, when we are out of D.C., he was going to fire Robert Mueller,” Speier told California’s KQED News.
Now it’s just a rumor, so take it with a large hunk of salt. It may be completely false. But I truly do think he’s going to do that at some point and right before Christmas might be, at least in his mind, the least damaging time to do it. I’m sure his advisors and attorneys would try to talk him out of it, but this is Trump we’re talking about. He believes himself to be virtually omniscient and that his gut instinct is always right (all evidence to the contrary, of course). And I still predict that if and when he tries this, it may very well bring down his entire presidency. And that’s a good thing.
